Homework (depending on the grade level) involves reviewing the work of the day, completing unfinished work, working on special assignments or projects, reviewing for tests, or practicing specific skills that a student may be experiencing difficulties with.
Homework serves to increase learning through the reinforcement of classroom learning. It is a planned and purposeful activity that develops knowledge, skills and attitudes to help students become life-long learners. Homework helps to:
-
promote independent learning and creative expression;
-
encourage self-discipline and a sense of responsibility;
-
develop planning, organizational and time management skills;
-
prepare and study for tests and develop study habits; and
-
maintain a vehicle between home and school.
The appropriate amount of homework will increase as your child goes through school. A general homework guideline is 10 minutes per grade.
The Kindergarten programme is designed to capitalize on children's natural desire to learn, as well as to create opportunities to investigate, discover and develop a better understanding of the world around them through play, books and hands on experience.
Primary: Grade 1 to 3
Homework is not specifically assigned. However, homework may consist of incomplete work, in addition to interactive learning experiences between parents and their children, providing enrichment in the areas of literacy and numeracy. Students may be asked to bring materials from home for theme work. A period of time for reading or being read to is recommended each day.
Junior: Grades 4 to 6
Students are asked to spend some time (30 to 60 minutes) working at home. Students will be required to complete work and any unfinished assigned during the day, study for upcoming tests and quizzes and complete additional research projects. Additional time to read daily is emphasized
Intermediate: Grades 7 & 8
Students are encouraged to spend 30 minutes to one hour or more working at home. Students will be required to complete and correct assigned work and any unfinished work assigned during the day, study for upcoming tests and quizzes and complete additional research projects. Additional time to read daily is emphasized.
Students whose dismissal time will be delayed due to remedial work, completion of assignments or discipline will be given a full day's notice through the form of a note.

- Provide a suitable environment for homework.
- Provide time and encouragement so that your child will complete all homework.
- Be prepared to co-ordinate homework efforts with the teacher.
- Guide and assist but never do the homework.
- Monitor television, radio, computer and video game usage so that homework and fitness do not suffer.
