CAMPION CODE OF CONDUCT:
Co-Curricular Participation Policy

RefereeAcademics and co-curricular activities are an integral part of the learning environment at St. Edmund Campion Secondary School. This policy promotes involvement in co-curricular programs while at the same time emphasizes the importance of academics. Through active involvement in the school community, a student will grow in self-confidence and self-understanding and the student’s faith, intellectual, social, and emotional development will flourish.

Through participation with clubs and/or teams and by competing against others, students can learn and practice many of the qualities that are sought in today’s work environment. Skills such as collaboration, cooperation, leadership and problem solving are part of the development of a well-rounded student. It is important, however, that students realize that their participation is a supplementary process to their education. Their primary responsibility should be to achieve academic excellence. To this end, the following Co-Curricular Participation Policy has been implemented.

It is the student participant’s responsibility to:

  • Represent St. Edmund Campion S.S. with honesty and integrity to the best of their ability at all times;
  • Abide by the rules and regulations of St. Edmund Campion S.S. as set out in the school’s Code of Student Behaviour and Discipline;
  • Respect themselves as well as their team-mates, coaches, staff advisors, referees, spectators and fellow competitors, and abide by the Region of Peel Secondary School Athletic Association’s Code of Conduct and/or any policy statement governing the conduct of the club or group.

 POLICY VIOLATIONS

Participation in any co-curricular activity is a privilege that is granted to St. Edmund Campion students who, to the best of their ability, continue to fulfill their obligations as Catholic students. Should any student be unable to fulfil the requirements of the Participation Policy, they will be removed from the activity. The period of removal may be permanent or for a suitable length of time based upon the problem encountered. Whether a student is removed from an activity or chooses to quit, they will not be eligible to participate in any other co-curricular activity for the remainder of the school year.

 ACADEMIC CONCERNS

In the event that the removal is based upon academic difficulty, the following procedures will be employed:

  1. The student will not be permitted to participate, practice, or play until the next reporting period.
  2. During their removal from the co-curricular activity, students will be expected to improve their academic standing.

Please refer to the Academic Eligibility Policy for specific procedures.

 CO-CURRICULAR ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY POLICY

Academics and co-curricular activities are an integral part of the learning environment at St. Edmund Campion Secondary School. The intent of the Co-Curricular Academic Eligibility Policy is to provide students with the opportunity to participate in the school co-curricular activities while emphasizing the importance of academics.

Any student at St. Edmund Campion S.S. who is failing more than 1 course at the mid‑term or at the end of the semester report, will not be eligible to participate in any co-curricular activity until the next reporting date (mid or end of semester). At the next reporting date (mid or end of semester), the student may be reinstated if he/she is passing the course(s) he/she was failing at the last reporting date. In order to be reinstated, the student’s report card must be shown to the appropriate Coach / Teacher Advisor.

Academic Eligibility for Co-Curricular Activities will be determined as follows:

FALL SPORTS: Semester 2 final marks from previous year + current Semester 1 mid-term marks
WINTER SPORTS: Semester 1 mid-term + final marks
SPRING SPORTS: Semester 1 final marks + Semester 2 mid-term marks

Students may appeal the ineligibility status to the Appeals Committee, which is made up of the Principal, or Principal's designate, Department Head, and a member of the Coaching staff or Teacher Advisory staff not directly involved. Input will be sought from the subject teachers, the Coach / Teacher Advisor and other appropriate staff before a decision is made. It is the student’s responsibility to have each of her/his teachers fill out the Co-Curricular Academic Eligibility form and return it to the Main Office. Coaches and Teacher Advisors are responsible for verifying that the students on teams or in clubs are meeting academic standards. The Appeals Committee will review exceptional cases.
