The United Nations Club is a club that combines theoretical and practical aspects of Social Justice. Students in the UN Club research and try to solve global Issues through Model United Nations Competitions. Students, through role play, learn about the issues plaguing our world and work with other students around the region and province to seek out solutions. In addition, UN Club members lead and participate in many different social justice initiatives to help their own communities. With projects such as Halloween for Hunger and Out of the Cold, students work to help answer the needs of our homeless.
Through the UN Club students live out the true meaning of citizenship; local, national and global. They are Ambassadors for Social Justice.
Model United Nations (also Model UN or MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about civics, effective communication, globalization and multilateral diplomacy. In Model UN, students take on roles as foreign diplomats and participate in a simulated session of an intergovernmental organization (IGO). Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems.

DELEGATE/STUDENT PREPARATION
UN TEAM AT CHAMUN 2008
On April 24th and 25th our United Nations Club sent a team of 10 delegates to compete in CHAMUN at the North York Civic Centre. Campion was the only Dufferin-Peel school represented this year, and the students did a fantastic job representing various countries around the world in the General Assembly and the League of Arab States.
Our students worked collaboratively and cooperatively with 300 other students from across the GTA tackling significant global issues. In the General Assembly, representing countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and the Caribbean, our students debated and helped to create resolutions on the topics of human trafficking, developing country debt, and the impact of natural disasters. In the League of Arab States the issues discussed included the status of women, the Iraq war, and Israeli occupied territories.
Our students were very well prepared and tackled these difficult issues with respect and maturity. And, at the closing ceremonies this became very apparent as our very own Ryan Degen was given an award for his representation of Kuwait in the League of Arab States.
Our delegates did Campion proud in their preparation and participation for CHAMUN 2008. They were true ambassadors, not only for their assigned countries, but for Campion and Dufferin-Peel.
Congratulations UN Delegates!!
UN TEAM AT CHAMUN 2007
On May 3rd and 4th, the UN Club competed in the CHAMUN 2007 in Toronto. It was our first competition this year, but given our delegation’s performance you could never tell this was true. Discussing issues such as the environment, human trafficking, nuclear proliferation and more, our 7 delegates did a fantastic job representing their respective countries in the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council and the Security Council. They looked like veteran delegates as they stood time and time again to voice their opinions and helped to create tangible resolutions to the topics faced in their committees. Congratulations to all the delegates on a job well done. Also, Congratulations to Dimitri Mikhailitchenko for winning best Policy Paper award as Ghana in the Security Council.
UN TEAM AT DPMUN 2007
For the first time ever, Dufferin-Peel held a Model United Nations on May 24th and 25th. St. Edmund Campion was there with a fantastic 12 member UN delegation.
In the General Assembly, our delegation had a great deal to say and solid solutions to present on the issues of the Militarization of Space and the Environment as the countries of Belgium, Congo, Iraq, Brazil, Pakistan, Nicaragua, Sweden, Japan and the United States.
In the Security Council, our delegates dealt with some solid issues and had to be quick on their feet when crisis after crisis hit them surrounding nuclear space weapons and the death of Fidel Castro. Our delegates representing Belgium, Congo and the United States responded with lightning reflexes and diplomatic ease.
Our delegation certainly stood out, as 3 of our delegates won awards at DPMUN 2007:
- Dimitri Mikhailitchenko won the award for Best Delegate as the U.S. in the Security Council.
- Boney Okeowo won the award for Best Costume as Congo in the General Assembly.
- Ryan Degen won the award for Best Position Paper as the U.S. in the General Assembly.
Congratulations to all the delegates on an A+ performance. You not only represented your respective countries brilliantly, you were wonderful ambassadors for Campion. Ms. Castro, Ms. Newton and Ms. Soares are very proud of all of you.
