Course Description
The focus of this course is learning through practice and building on what students know. Students will be introduced to new ideas, materials, and processes for artistic thinking and experimentation. Their learning will include the refined application of the elements and principles of design, incorporating the creative and design processes, and the relationship between form and content. Students will also learn about the social and historical importance of works of art through the study of Western and Canadian art, Contemporary Popular Culture, and the Media. By analyzing artworks and exploring new tools and techniques students will create meaningful studio projects that will develop and improve their technical skills and ability to creatively communicate ideas visually.
***Grade 9 Visual Art is recommended for success in this course. If not, student may find it challenging. ***
Units of Study

Unit 1 |
What is Art?
Students will look at the concepts of social justice, spirituality, and ethics in the art of various influential artists. The building of drawing skills begins with the use of drawing pencils, pencil crayons, and charcoal with activities focusing on art reproductions and personal expression. |

Unit 2 |
Design and Art
Students briefly review the elements and principles of design through various art activities and examine the practices of art related careers. Painting skills and techniques are reviewed through the use of acrylic paint. |

Unit 3 |
Mathematics and the Arts
Student are introduced to the important artistic techniques developed by the Greek and Roman ancient civilizations. Ratios, proportion, and the golden section are strategies that form the basis for studio activities. |

Unit 4 |
How Arts Shapes Society
Students examine the artworks of influential Canadian Artists; Jane Ash, Carl Beam, Joyce Weiland, Michael Snow, and Greg Curnoe. Printmaking/ Silkscreening techniques are learned through activities relating to identity, social consciousness, and stereotyping. |

Unit 5 |
Art and Popular Culture
Students learn about the artworks of various contemporary artists (e.g. Andy Warhol) that worked in multimedia. Looking art popular culture and its influence on art will help students develop wearable art in the form of Garbage Clothing. |

Welcome to a brand new semester in St. Edmund Campion’s Visual Arts Studios!
Your Art Instructors for this term are Ms. Rodricks and Ms. Picarazzi.
We are looking forward to an inspiring and creative semester here in Studios 317 & 318!!!
Every student taking the Visual Arts Course is expected to have an Art Kit that allows them to take work home and continue with assignments outside of the instructional time provided. We have selected the required materials and will assemble the kit ourselves to ensure that all of the materials are of good quality. The total for the kit is $30.00 per student.
These items have been offered to us at a discounted student rate. Please pay by cash to ensure quick receipt of materials (we will be going to pick them up ourselves so that there will be no delay in delivery). Teachers will initial these forms for cash received if you would like.
