The Accelerated Reader program at Campion is designed to allow students to select novels, plays, graphic novels, and non-fiction works (biographies and informative texts) which personally interest them. The program is intended to promote reading and is a mandatory component of some grade 9, 10 and 11 English classes.
Each student is expected to gain a certain number of Acclerated Reader points (determined by grade
and course level) which are counted towards the student's mark. While some time is provided in class
to read, students will also have to read on their own time to gain all their points.

Students need to know the following:
& Only one AR book may be signed out at a time.
& The borrowing period for AR books is two weeks. Books may be renewed once.
& Students will be given time in class each week to read, but reading will also need to be done out of
class. Usually 30 minutes twice a week is adequate in-class reading time.
& Students should not attempt the quiz until they have read the entire book, the progress of which is
tracked by their teacher.
& Students will not be allowed to take a quiz unless their English teacher has seen them reading the
book in class and can verify that they have read it.
& Students are not to attempt to take quizzes on movies that they have seen.
& Students are not to attempt to take quizzes on core texts – no 1D student can write on Macbeth or
Princess Bride, etc.
& Students will need their agenda signed or a pass from their teacher for the library and their
Campion I.D. card in order to take a test
& Students may take only one quiz each day.
& Quizzes for each book may be attempted only once. If they do not pass, they may not try the same
quiz again. Make sure they are ready!
& Students will not receive any points for a book unless they pass the quiz.
& Part points are only given if they achieve a pass, which varies from 60 to 70%, depending on the
book. Students should know that more difficult books will have a pass rate of 70%.
& If students have an I.E.P., they must identify this fact to their teacher for special instructions.
& The total number of points required by each student will be announced by a student’s teacher and
noted in each course outline. Details of how the points are factored into a student’s mark will also be
provided by each teacher.
Hints for success:
o Students should choose a book they enjoy, not just one with lots of points!
o Start with a smaller book. Set reasonable goals.
o Finish the entire book before taking the quiz.
o Talk to the librarian if students would like help or advice on taking quizzes.
o Keep trying!!
