UNIFORM POLICY

By choosing to attend St. Edmund Campion Secondary School, students and their parents have made a serious and long-term commitment to Catholic Education. The uniform is part of that commitment. It is a reflection of who we are and how we see ourselves and how others see our school. As a student at St. Edmund Campion, you are an ambassador of all that St. Edmund Campion symbolizes. Because of this, the uniform should be worn proudly and in good repair. Though we recognize our individuality, the uniform at St. Edmund Campion is what unites us as one community. There are variations within the prescribed uniform, which allow for a touch of personal style. Like everything else in a larger society, there are rules and regulations pertaining to the uniform; since you agree to the wearing of a uniform by coming to our school, we ask that you respect, understand and comply with the following information (GAP 504.00). School uniform items, as outlined in the school’s uniform policy, must be purchased from the board-approved supplier, R. J. McCarthy. The list of prescribed uniform articles is available at the time of purchase. DO NOT purchase articles that are not on this list.

  1. Students are to be in full uniform at all times in the school building, including hallways, classrooms, gymnasiums, the library and the cafeteria until they leave the property. While in the school, there will be no changing into other attire at any time during the school day. This pertains to all articles of clothing including footwear.

  2. Upon arrival to school, coats and/or jackets must be kept in lockers during the day. They are not to be worn anywhere in the building except when students are entering or leaving the building. Coats and/or jackets will not be a substitute for a school sweater at any time.

  3. For safety reasons, all school bags, backpacks, sport bags and draw-string bags are to remain in school lockers during the day. They are not to be carried in any part of the school during the day.

  4. Baseball caps, hats, bandanas, head wraps, scarves, do-rags, or other inappropriate headwear are not permitted in the building. If students choose to wear these items to and from school, they are to keep them in their lockers for the entire day. There are to be no hats at all in the building. Students who wear this type of headwear risk losing it.

  5. If a T-shirt is worn under the white dress shirt or blouse, it must be plain white, crew-neck style, and short-sleeved. The length of the T-shirt must not be longer than the white dress shirt/blouse or rugby/golf shirt being worn. The T-shirt must not have writing, pictures, or logos. Campion Physical Education T-shirts, coloured T-shirts, or tank tops are not permitted.

  6. School fleece jackets, vests, or rugby sweaters must be worn at all times. Students must wear these items everywhere in the school (foyer, hallways, classrooms, cafeteria and library). Classroom teachers have the prerogative to allow students to remove fleece jackets or vests while in their specific classroom, as long as the white dress shirts/blouses worn underneath are completely buttoned and tucked in. Golf shirts do not need to be tucked in, but they must be worn at an appropriate length. Students must arrive to and depart from class in full uniform.

  7. White Oxford shirts, French cut blouses, and golf shirts must NOT be visible below the bottom of fleece jackets and vests.

  8. School Spirit wear and clothing specific to co-curricular activities can only be worn on special designated days and Civvies days.

  9. The uniform is to be kept clean and in good repair (no rips, no cut-off sleeves, no unhemmed pants, no broken buttons on pants, etc.) every day. Students/parents are advised to use Civvies Days, statutory holidays and weekends to have the uniform cleaned, repaired and/or laundered.

  10. Exam days are considered school days and students are to be in full uniform during the exam period.

  11. Please refer to the Code of Student Behaviour in the student handbook for consequences associated with the infractions of our uniform requirements.
UNIFORM VIOLATIONS

  • It is expected that students be in full uniform at all times while they are in the school until they leave the property. Students not in full uniform will be given a Uniform Infraction Letter from their homeroom teacher. Students with unsigned/unreturned letters will be directed to the appropriate administrator.

  • Uniform violations that occur in other periods of the day will be directed to the appropriate administrator in the Main Office.

CIVIES DAY GUIDELINES

On these days, students have two choices: support the selected charity with your donation or wear the school uniform. As these days are requested on behalf of the students, the expectations of appropriate attire which govern all of us are still in place. Articles of clothing which do not comply with the principles outlined in the Code of Student Behaviour as defined by the Dufferin-Peel C.D.S.B. and the moral standards of our school are unacceptable at all times. These would include rude or offensive slogans or items which do not respect the rights of self or others. Clothing worn on a Civvies Day, therefore, should be modest and appropriate to a Catholic School/classroom environment. Students who disregard these expectations will be sent home to change and they jeopardize the future of Civvies Days.

  • All students are expected to dress neatly, modestly, and with a sense of personal pride that reflects our Catholic faith.
  • Shirts must have sleeves. Halter, tank, belly, or crop tops are not permitted.
  • Shorts, skirts, and pants should be of appropriate length.
  • Bandanas, sweatbands, kerchiefs, and sunglasses must not be worn.
  • Students who wear baseball caps may be asked to remove them in classrooms as a matter of courtesy and are expected to comply with this request.
  • Gang related clothing and accessories are not permitted.

Attire which exhibits offensive suggestions and/or inappropriate statements or pictures, including those that address or display the following are not permitted:

  • Sexual content
  • Substance abuse, alcohol, tobacco, or drugs
  • Violence
  • Profanity
  • Inappropriate references to nationality, race, gender or religion
