Interact is Rotary International’s service club for young people ages 14-18. Interact Clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary Clubs that provide support and guidance. The word ‘interact’ refers to ‘International Action’. Youth Rotary Business Clubs encourages students to ‘give to the community’ by focusing on ‘service above self’, which is Rotary International’s motto.
Today, nearly 200,000 young people in more than 100 countries are part of over 8,000 clubs. Each Interact Club is required to complete at least two major service projects annually, one to serve the community and one to promote international understanding. A chartered Youth Rotary Business Club has international recognition and meets the criteria to have donations matched at multiple rotary club levels.
All Youth Rotary Business Clubs brainstorm ways in which they can raise money for their selected charities. Through the creation of pledge forms, the sale of water and pizza combos during basketball games and the creation of chocolate themed Hershey Boxes, our new Youth Rotary Business Club has raised over $1000 for “Nothing But Nets”. This is an international charity designed to help prevent the spread of Malaria in Africa through the use of specially treated bed nets. Our semester two charity focused on a local charity, The Covenant House. The Covenant House is a Toronto-based shelter that offers clean clothes, meals, health care, counseling and pastoral services to local youth ages 16-24. Their goal is to help youth move from a life on the streets to a life with a future.
On Friday April 3rd, 2009, members attended a conference to discuss fundraising efforts. On June 2nd, 2009, members presented to hundreds of business students in the school library in an attempt to recruit students for next year’s club.
