Welcome to Science at Mount Carmel…
where the love of science and technology happily co-exist!!!

2006/2007 was a busy year as Mount Carmel science classrooms get a much needed face-lift. Three of our seven classrooms have been updated and are in use, giving our students better access to new benches, taps and fume hoods. Our remaining four classrooms are scheduled to be overhauled over the summer months, to be in use hopefully, by early fall of 2007.
As well as new facilities, the science department at OLMC is committed to providing and incorporating recent technologies and methods to further enhance our student’s learning experiences. New additions to our repertoire include…
- Spectrophotometer equipment for senior chemistry and biology
- Pasco mobile data collectors for various parameters & data software
New top-loading scales for our junior classes
Mobile computer stations for student use between our disciplines

Grade 9/10 Science:
The grade 9/10 science courses are designed to allow students to experience the 3 different science pathways Biology, Chemistry, & Physics before their senior years. Please refer to counselors when selecting either the academic or applied level.
Grade 11/12 Biology:
The senior biology courses explore a wide variety of topics about our living biosphere. Some of these include;
Cellular Functions |
Genetic Continuity |
Internal Systems and Regulation |

Diversity of Living Things |
Plants: Anatomy, Growth, and Functions |

Using scientific processes and experimentation, students experience the ongoing dynamic search for solutions to many of humankind’s problems. Successful completion of these courses ensures the student to be scientifically literate, consequently enabling them to analyze and discuss various issues intelligently.
Grade 11/12 Chemistry:
Students continue to expand on the basic chemistry principles introduced in grade 9/10. Emphasis is placed on lab skills, technical applications, mechanics and quantization of chemical systems. A strong background in grade 10 academic science and grade 10 academic math is recommended.\ for the “U’ levels. Grade 10 applied science is required for the “C” level.
Grade11/12 Physics:
This course expands the basic principles of physics learned in grades 9 and 10. Emphasis is on developing scientific-inquiry skills, problem solving and making connections between physics learned in class to the real world. The topics covered here are more in-depth studies of motion, energy, sound, light, electricity and magnetism and the laws which govern them. A strong background in grade 10 academic science and math is recommended for the university physics course. Grade 10 applied science is required for the college level physics.

Grade 11 Science:
This course enables students to increase their understanding of science and it’s technological applications. Students explore a range of topics, including the safe use of everyday chemicals; the science of nutrition and body function; waste management; the application of scientific principles in space; and technologies in everyday life. Emphasis is placed on the role of science and technology in daily life and in relation to social and environmental issues.
