1. The Salutatorian Award
Award: School Gift
Donor: Principal of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
The recipient will be the graduating student who has been chosen to be Salutatorian.
2. School Council Award
Award: $200 cheque
Donor: Our Lady of Mount Carmel School Council
The recipient will:
a) be a graduating student; and,
b) have demonstrated the greatest overall personal growth throughout their years at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Secondary School.
3. The Catholic Student Leadership Award
Award: Bible, certificate, $100 cheque
Donor: Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board and Our Lady of Mount Carmel School
The recipient will:
a) be a graduating student;
b) have showed leadership in his/her years at Mount Carmel; and,
c) have best exemplified the Catholic faith and Catholic school philosophy.
4. The Edward King Memorial Scholarship
Award: $100 cheque, certificate
Donor: Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board
The recipient will:
a) be a graduating student;
b) be pursuing post secondary education (University, College or an Apprenticeship Program); and,
c) best exemplify the combination of Academic Excellence, Extra-Curricular Involvement and Christian Commitment. Also, in remembering Ed King's motto "Take a Risk, Get Involved, Be Committed".
5. The Thomas J. Reilly Scholarship Award
Award: $100 cheque, certificate
Donor: Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board
This scholarship established in recognition of a former Director of Education Thomas J. Reilly.
The recipient will:
a) be a graduating student;
b) have demonstrated excellence in the study of a modern language(s) and intends to pursue post secondary education.
6. The Bishop Oscar Romero Award
Award: $150 cheque and certificate
Donor: OECTA
The recipient will:
a) be a graduating student; and,
b) have promoted social justice and community involvement by encouraging the student population to seek awareness of social justice issues and then work towards improving the human condition.
7. Hazel McCallion Bursary
Award: $200 cheque, certificate
Donor: Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board
This annual bursary was established honouring Mayor Hazel McCallion upon her 25th year of leadership in the City of Mississauga.
The recipient will:
a) be a graduating student;
b) have achieved the highest mark in the Grade 12 Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources University/College Preparation Course.
This course was chosen since it emulates the leadership of Mayor Hazel McCallion. This course has a large leadership component as well as focusing on fiscal responsibility and ethical business
8. The Lieutenant-Governor’s Community Volunteer Award
Award: Pin, certificate and $100
Donor: Ontario Government and Meadowvale Pharmacy
The recipient will:
a) be a graduating student; and,
b) have exemplified dedication to volunteer work in the community.
9. Jeffrey Fleeton Memorial Fund Bursary
Award: Gift (worth up to $500 per recipient)
Donor: Jeffrey Fleeton Foundation
The Jeffrey Fleeton Memorial Fund was created to recognize young people who have demonstrated leadership and commitment to the greater community. This fund is in memory of a 17 year old boy, Jeffrey Fleeton, who passed away in July 2000 from a tragic accident in Oakville, Ontario.
The recipient will:
a) be a graduating student through the Alternative Education Program;
b) be planning to attend a Canadian University or College and is in need of a scholarship to continue his/her education;
c) have shown that he/she is the best that he/she can be; and,
d) be a resident of Peel.
10. The Loretto Sisters’ Award of Excellence
Award: $1000
Donor: Loretto Sisters
The recipient will:
a) be a female graduating student;
b) have demonstrated core IBVM values of respect, justice, sincerity, courage, and
compassion;
c) have shown effort and commitment to academic achievement;
d) be pursuing a college or university education in the next academic year;
e) have been involved in social justice;
f) have contributed to building a Christian community through example and
involvement and/or leadership; and,
g) all things being equal, the award will be given to a student whose financial need is greater.
11. The Terry Lane Humanitarian Award sponsored by the Knights of Columbus
Award: $300 and certificate
Donor: Knights of Columbus
The emphasis is on a student that has time to do well academically, but also time to give to the school and community.
The recipient will:
a) be a male graduating student;
b) be pursuing college or university education in the next academic year;
c) have been a leader/ or involved contributor in the school community;
d) have been actively involved in community events outside of the school; and
e) all things equal, the award should be given to a student whose financial need is greater.
12. Panky Pancras Award ( years to be awarded – 2012 and $370 in 2013)
Award: $500 cheque
Donor: Panky Pancras Scholarship Account
This award is offered in remembrance of Pangajan Pancras a much loved grade 12 student from the graduating class of 2005-2006. Pangajan passed away on February 15th 2006 in his final year of high school. He died from a swift-moving leukemia. To honour Pangajan’s memory his family has donated monies for a $500.00 scholarship.
The recipient will:
a) be a graduating student;
b) be someone, like Pangajan, who is persistent in the face of challenge; who is a positive and caring individual.
This award is usually presented to the recipient at the Graduate Mass held at the Wenesday 7:15PM in June in the last week of school at St. John of the Cross Church. Panganjan’s parents usually present the award to the student. Special mention at the graduation ceremony. A certificate will be awarded the night of the graduation.
13. R. J. McCarthy Scholarship Award
Award: $500
Donor: R.J McCarthy
R. J. McCarthy Scholarship award rewards a graduating student who has made a significant contribution to the quality of student life and whose character and accomplishments exemplify the mission of the school.
The recipient will:
a) be a graduating student;
b) have made a significant contribution to the quality of student life; and,
c) have strived for excellence in the tradition of Catholic education.
14. Principal’s Leadership Award
Award: $250
Donor: Principal of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
The recipient will:
a) be a graduating student; and,
b) have demonstrated the ability to combine exemplary leadership roles in
school.
15. The Governor General's Academic Medal
Award: Bronze Medal, certificate and $500
Donor: Federal Government and Our Lady of Mount Carmel
The recipient will:
a) be a graduating student;
b) have taken at least six courses in their graduating year; and,
c) have the highest academic average in 6 grade 12 courses taken at Mount Carmel
including English during their grade 12 academic year.
16. The Valedictorian Award
Award: School ring and $100 cheque
Donor: Jostens and Our Lady of Mount Carmel
The recipient will be the graduating student who has been chosen to be Valedictorian.
17. The Canadian Citizenship Award
Award: Certificate
Donor: Member of Parliament for Mississauga Streetsville, Brad Butt and Our Lady of Mount Carmel
The recipient will:
a) be a graduating student;
b) have achieved personal academic success; and,
c) have contributed to the school and the larger community in a significant way, and who would otherwise not be recognized.
18. The Ryan Maiato Scholarship ( last year to be awarded – 2012)
Award: $800
Donor: The Maiato Family
The recipient will:
a) be a graduating student;
b) have been chosen from their 250-500 word paper that expresses their thoughts on “If you found yourself with a physical disability, how would you cope with the social challenges and physical challenges that you would face on a daily basis.”;
c) have a reference letter from a teacher who has taught you; and
d) submit your paper and reference letter to Mrs. Brisbois Abbott by mid May.
19. The Catholic Student of the Year
(May or may not be a graduating student – a grade 10, 11, or 12 student determined by the principal and chaplaincy leader. If the recipient is a graduating student, the award will be presented at the graduating ceremony, otherwise it will be presented at the awards night in the fall.)
