Originally from Manila, Philippines, Luz moved to Canada in 1977. She graduated from Ryerson Polytechnic University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce and later went on to receive her Certified Human Resources Professional designation in 1996 from the University of Guelph.
Luz and her family have lived in Mississauga Ward 6 area for over 20 years and have been actively involved in the community. Her most recent achievements include:
- Recipient of the Mississauga’s Citizen of the Year Award for 2006
- Appointed by the provincial government as a member of the Ontario Trillium Foundation’s Grant Review Team
- President-Elect, Catholic Women’s League, St. Joseph’s Parish, Streetsville
- Chair, Carassauga Festival Inc. for four consecutive years (2003-2006)
- Member, Arts Review Taskforce created by Mayor Hazel McCallion (2005-2006)
- Vice-Chair, Marketing & Fundraising, Carassauga Festival Inc. (2 years)
- President, Culture Philippines of Ontario
- President, Association of Filipino Canadian Accountants Auxiliary Group
- Former Member, School Council, St. Bernadette School
Luz has been married for 28 years to Resty. They have two children, Jonathan and Justine. Jonathan is a Mechanical Engineering student at University of Waterloo and a graduate of St. Joseph Secondary School. Justine is a Grade 11 honour student at St. Joseph Secondary School.
