Board Receives Directive from Minister of Education - 09/29/06

The Director of Education today received a letter from the Minister of Education, exercising her authority under the Education Act, directing staff to implement the two-year Deficit Management Plan, known as Plan B. This plan, prepared by staff and ministry-appointed special advisor, Peter Lauwers, was rejected by trustees at a special board meeting on September 14.

The Minister of Education addressed trustees at the board’s September 26 meeting urging them to reconsider the plan. Citing the millions of dollars in program and service reductions already implemented, the lack of new information presented by the Minister and the board’s firm position regarding the need for the province to take immediate corrective measures to fix the funding formula, Trustees declined to revisit the plan. This led to the Ministerial letter received today by the board.
