Dufferin-Peel hosts its 7th Annual Joe Sax Activity Festival

Event highlighting modified physical activities for students promotes inclusion through play

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will host the seventh annual Joe Sax Activity Festival for students in the Mississauga South Family of Schools. This festival teaches modified physical activities that respects all students' abilities. Students in Grades 4 to 8 will take part in the team activities, as a way of promoting inclusion through play.

“We find that students really get into the spirit of the festival,” says Adriana Tavares, Special Education Resource Teacher. “The festival contributes to the physical, social and psychological development of students, through positive and successful experiences in sport. Every year it brings big smiles to their faces.”

The Joe Sax Activity Festival was named in tribute to Joe Sax, a former teacher at Iona Catholic Secondary School, in Mississauga, who passed away in 2004. A six-time Canadian track-and-field champion, Joe was also a distance coach for the Mississauga Track Club, a member of the Toronto Olympic Club and the former Canadian record holder for the 3000m Steeplechase.

Since its inception in 2004, special guests at the Joe Sax Activity Festival have included OHL hockey players, a professional soccer player, a Canadian Olympic coach, and a Canadian Olympic gold medal winner.
