Board on track with year 3 Full Day Kindergarten sites

Thirty-one more Catholic schools across the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will offer Full Day Kindergarten in September 2012.

The announcement on March 2 of the Ministry of Education’s approval of Year 3 sites proposed by the board will bring the total number of Dufferin-Peel Catholic schools offering the program to 55 by the 2012-2013 school year.

The Ministry also announced funding to the board of $7,168,405 for capital improvements to convert existing classrooms to Full Day Kindergarten classrooms and to construct new Full Day Kindergarten classrooms as needed.

“We applaud the province for its commitment to Full Day Kindergarten, a program that has proven to be a huge hit with parents/guardians in our community,” said Anna Abbruscato, chair of the board of trustees. “It would be fantastic if we could have more classes funded by the province sooner than 2014, as this is a request that we frequently hear from our community,” she added.

“This is great news for Dufferin-Peel,” said John B. Kostoff, director of education. “We are confident that we will be ready to roll out the full program in all our elementary schools by 2014.”

“Full Day Kindergarten has been very well received by our community,” Kostoff added. “Enrolment was very strong during our recent registration week and our experience with kindergarten registration in general is that interest and registrations will continue to increase.”

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board opened 48 Full Day Kindergarten classes in 16 schools in September 2010. It will open 21 additional classes in eight schools in September 2011 and 103 classrooms in the 31 schools (see list below) in September 2012.
