Catholic Board Students Test their Skills in Local Competition
Dufferin-Peel Catholic students to compete in Technological Skills Competition

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board’s Students’ Technological Skills Competition will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2011, from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at St. Augustine Secondary School in Brampton. Dufferin-Peel students will have the opportunity to show off their skills in an Olympic-style, hands-on competition, which serves as a qualification round for the Skills Canada Provincial Competition.

Approximately 500 students from approximately 20 schools (both elementary and secondary) will compete in over 40 trade and technological areas, including 3D character animation, baking, carpentry, hair styling, health care, and robotics to name a few.

“Our students really look forward to the skills competition,” said Ralph Borrelli, Associate Director of Instructional Services.  “They work either on their own, or in teams, to create practical items that benefit our community. We are pleased to provide a forum where our students can receive acknowledgement for their talents in the skilled trades and technological subjects.”

Students will be challenged to make items that are reflective of this year’s theme, Building the City of God. Representatives from local businesses and colleges will judge the competition, and the top students will qualify to move on to the provincial finals being held in Waterloo this May.

“Dufferin-Peel students do well every year at the provincial competition,” said Annette Ryan, OYAP and Tech Ed Consultant. “Last year, we brought home 11 medals, three of which were gold. Students have a lot of fun, while at the same time, challenging themselves and learning.”

Students who are successful at the provincial competition will advance to the Skills Canada National Competition, where they will have the opportunity to compete against students from across Canada.
