Dufferin-Peel Catholic schools celebrate World Teachers’ Day
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will mark United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) World Teachers’ Day with a message to the system recognizing and thanking the board’s teachers, and those who support them in the classroom, for their contribution to Catholic education. World Teachers’ Day is celebrated annually on October 5.
“Teachers are a fundamental component of our education system and we encourage everyone to recognize and thank them for their commitment to students and to Catholic education,” said Anna Abbruscato, chair of the board. “We are very proud of their dedication and hard work on behalf of students and of the profound affect they have in enriching young minds.”
UNESCO’s theme for World Teachers’ Day this year is Recovery Begins with Teachers. This theme reflects the role of teachers dealing with the aftermath of a major crisis and how vital teachers are in rebuilding social, economic and academic values.
“We are blessed to have Catholic teachers who see their work as more than a professional endeavour, but rather as a Ministry of our Church,” said John Kostoff, director of education. “They help students to seek, learn, understand, and put Catholic values to work by making contributions to the larger society.” John Kostoff added, “We also recognize and salute the contributions of the broad range of staff that support teachers’ classroom activities. Education is a team concept and we are proud of all our players.”
During morning announcements on October 5, students at each school will be encouraged to thank their teachers and express their appreciation for the important role they play in their lives.
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is one of largest and most diverse school districts in Ontario, with approximately 87,000 students in 145 schools throughout Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon and Orangeville. With over 10,000 employees, the board is also one of the largest employers in the region.
