Four Dufferin-Peel elementary students win Young Authors Awards
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is pleased to announce that four Dufferin-Peel elementary students are the proud recipients of the provincial Young Authors Awards, sponsored by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA).
The awards celebrate the writing talents and accomplishments of students who submit short stories, poems, non-fiction articles and plays in both English and French. The first place winners at each school advanced to their school board level and then to the provincial competition.
Winners from Dufferin-Peel include:
Olivia Nicole Capirchio from St. Basil Catholic Elementary School in Mississauga, who won best poem in the JK/SK category, for her work, The Snowman.
Caleigh Chambers from Queen of Heaven Catholic Elementary School in Mississauga who won best short story in the Grade 3-4 category. Caleigh wrote a creative piece about the life of a potato in her short story, The Potato Diary.
Sarah Matta from St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Elementary School in Mississauga who won best French short story, in the Grade 3-4 category. Her story, Le Bon Coeur, is about the kindness of giraffe at her birthday party.
Kayleen Anne La Rosa Cadalin from St. Hilary Catholic Elementary School in Mississauga won best play, in the Grades 7-8 category. Kayleen Anne’s play, Just Sixteen, is a crime drama centered around a teenage detective.
Each year, the collection of winning entries is published by OECTA, in a book. Plaques were also presented to each winner at their end of year school assembly or mass. The full collection of winning entries is also available at http://www.oecta.on.ca.
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is one of the largest and most diverse school boards in Ontario.
