Funding approved for construction of two new Brampton Catholic schools

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is pleased to confirm that the Ministry of Education has approved capital funding for the construction of two new Catholic elementary schools for Brampton.

The two schools would be located in west Brampton (Credit Valley) within the current catchment area of St. Roch Catholic Secondary School, and east Brampton, within the Cardinal Ambrozic Catholic Secondary School catchment area. The west Brampton school would be built to accommodate 555 pupil places, while the east Brampton school would be built to accommodate 505 pupil places. Both schools would be built to open in September 2013.

Approval for the new schools is part of Ministry $650 million in capital funding for school projects across the province.

Ministry approval for these projects follows the submission, by school boards, of business cases and capital priorities earlier this year.

“We are pleased to learn that Brampton students in high growth areas of our board will be getting new schools within two years,” said chair Anna Abbruscato. “This will relieve pressure on existing area schools and we thank the Ministry for acknowledging the needs of the community in this regard.”

The board had submitted business cases and capital priorities for 10 projects. “We anticipate that further announcements would be made in 2012, and that the balance of the capital priorities we submitted would be considered prior to those announcements,” said John Kostoff, Director of Education.

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is one of the largest and most diverse school boards in Ontario. It serves approximately 87,000 students in 145 schools located throughout Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon and Orangeville. With over 10,000 employees, the board is also one of the largest employers in the region.
