Iona’s First-ever Regional Arts Graduating Class Dances for Haiti
Grade 12 dance students showcase original choreography in a fundraiser for Haiti
This year marks Iona Catholic Secondary School’s first-ever graduating class of its regional arts program. On Friday, January 14 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Grade 12 dance students are showcasing their talent in an original choreographed showcase entitled, ‘There is a Time’.
“I am so proud of the accomplishments and growth that all of these amazing dancers have shown over the last three-and-a-half years at Iona,” says Principal Joanna Boudreau. “Throughout their time in the Iona dance program, these dancers have walked through the journey together with many proud moments along the way.”
Friday’s show will highlight dance techniques created by Jose Limon, a famous dancer and choreographer who in 1956 performed a piece entitled, “There is a Time,” based on a Bible passage from the book of Ecclesiastes that states, “to everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.”
“The Iona dancers have incorporated what they learned in dance composition and choreography, to create their own personal and original dance piece to one line of the Ecclesiastes writings,” says Angela Caporiccio, dance teacher at Iona. “They have worked very hard to prepare for this performance. I am very proud of the accomplishments and tenacity of the graduating class of 2011, the first graduating class from Iona’s dance program.”
Tickets are $7 at the door and all proceeds from the show will go the Free the Children charity, to building a water system for a community in Haiti – a project for which students have been raising funds all year.
