Dufferin-Peel students register significant improvement in secondary mathematics results
Results from the spring 2010 administration of the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) primary division and junior division assessments of reading, writing and mathematics, and the Grade 9 assessment of mathematics indicate that Dufferin-Peel students have maintained or improved their achievement compared to last year on seven of the eight assessments.
This year’s performance has continued the already notable achievement of Dufferin-Peel students over the last five years of EQAO testing. More specifically, assessment results in Grade 9 mathematics demonstrated dramatic increases of 7% and 9% in the applied and academic programs of study, respectively.
The primary (Grade 3) and junior (Grade 6) assessment results were each relatively consistent with last year, with the exception of junior writing which increased by 4% in 2009-2010. Examination of all eight EQAO assessments has indicated that the proportion of Dufferin-Peel students achieving the provincial standard in Grades 3, 6 and 9 continues to meet or exceed provincial averages.
“We are very pleased and encouraged by the ongoing improvement in our students’ EQAO results,” said Ralph Borrelli, Associate Director of Instructional Services. “The trend of continuous improvement in student achievement is the product of a collaborative learning partnership of which school, family and faith are key components. We must, however, continue to seek ways to assist all students in achieving their full potential and that is not a wish, but a goal.”
The EQAO assessments provide an indication of each student’s achievement in reading, writing and mathematics. The spring 2010 assessment results report on three groups of students: Grade 3 students in the areas of reading, writing and mathematics; Grade 6 students in the areas of reading, writing and mathematics and Grade 9 students in academic and applied mathematics.

The board will further analyze the EQAO results to provide support to schools, parents and students to ensure that more students continue to improve in all assessment areas. Each school has its own plan, which will be reviewed in the context of the test results, to improve students’ skills in all subject areas. School plans include strategies to assist all students, including intervention and reinforcement for students who did not achieve the provincial standard.
Board and individual school results will be available on the board website at www.dpcdsb.org later in the fall of 2010. Additional information on the various assessments can be obtained through the EQAO web site at www.eqao.com.
