Students debate global issues at inaugural

Dufferin-Peel Model United Nations Symposium

On May 24 and 25, 65 students from the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will participate in the first-ever Dufferin-Peel Model United Nations Symposium at the Brampton City Hall. The student delegates will represent over 50 countries in a model General Assembly and Security Council. The Mayor and City Council have allowed the board to use Council Chambers and the Council Committee Room to help the students have an authentic experience.

“This event will provide our students with a unique opportunity to discuss and debate the many global issues that are impacting our world today,” said Dufferin-Peel Chair Bruno Iannicca. “It is these experiences that help to move students from information and knowledge, to understanding and action.”

Students will debate the issues of space militarization, as well as the environment in the General Assembly. In the Security Council they will be looking at Nuclear Proliferation and the mission in Afghanistan.

"The City of Brampton is pleased to be the host and sponsor for this inaugural event," said Brampton Mayor Susan Fennell. "As a multicultural community representing 62 distinct cultures, the City is well suited as a forum for discussions of global issues by these students."

City Councillor Sandra Hames will address the delegates on behalf of the Mayor and officially open the symposium.
