Dufferin-Peel opens Parenting and Family Literacy Centres
at four elementary schools
On September 21, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will open Parenting and Family Literacy Centres in four elementary schools. These centres are located at Canadian Martyrs School and St. Teresa of Avila School in Mississauga, Holy Cross School in Malton and St. Monica School in Brampton. Each centre will officially open at 9 a.m., with ribbon cutting ceremonies taking place at 1 p.m.
The Parenting and Family Literacy Centres will welcome all parents/caregivers in the respective school communities who are caring for children newborn to age 6. The goal of these programs is to promote positive parent-child interaction, as well as to engage parents/caregivers and children in play-based early literacy and numeracy activities that will help to prepare children for a successful start at school. The daily program will include free play, art activities that will build on children’s natural curiosity, circle-time with favourite songs, rhymes and stories, as well as snack time. The centres will be open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (program times vary slightly at each site).
These centres are funded by the Ministry of Education and are staffed with a Parent Worker/Facilitator trained in Early Childhood Education and Family Support.
