Loyola Senior Boys Soccer Team to play for OFSAA Provincial Championship title

Mississauga Catholic school prepares to send its fourth championship team this year to provincial finals

Mississauga’s Loyola Catholic Secondary School has proven that it’s a force to be reckoned with when it comes to its sports teams. Coaches at the school are preparing to send the Senior Boys AAA Soccer Team, the Warriors, to battle for the provincial title in Kingston June 2-4.

The team captured the ROPSSAA (Region of Peel Secondary School Athletic Association) AAA title earlier this month.

“This is the first time the Warriors Senior Boys Soccer Team has taken the regional title,” says Michael Ferro, the Warrior’s coach. “We have a lot of momentum going into the provincial competition, and our boys have been phenomenal both in their games and at practice. We have a good shot in Kingston.”

The Warriors hope to bring home the first place trophy for the school, which has won four ROPSSAA championship titles this year, but has yet to bring home the gold at the OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association) level.

The Warriors Senior Boys Hockey Team took home the provincial silver medal earlier this year and the Warriors Senior Girls AAA Basketball Team advanced to the OFSAA competition, but lost to Bishop Ryan Catholic Secondary School from Hamilton.  Also this year, Loyola’s Junior Boys Football Team took the top spot at the ROPSSAA Tier 2 championship, the highest level of competition the team could play for.

“Our student athletes and coaches are outstanding,” says Principal, Joseph Giancola,. “The senior boys soccer team marks Loyola’s 25th championship team in the last 8 years. This is a great achievement for a smaller school. I would like to congratulate all of our teams and coaches for this great accomplishment.”

Loyola Catholic Secondary School is proud of its tradition of excellence in Catholic education and has a current enrolment of 1163 students. Located at 3566 South Common Court in Mississauga, it is a member of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, which is one of the largest and most diverse school districts in Ontario.
