St. Sofia School to celebrate 30th Anniversary
On Thursday, September 30, St. Sofia Elementary School, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board’s Eastern Rite Byzantine Catholic school, will celebrate its 30th anniversary. The day will begin with a Moleben to the Mother of God (a Liturgical prayer service) and a school blessing on the Feast Day of St. Sofia and her daughters, Faith, Hope and Love.
To commemorate this significant event, the Mississauga school will host an Open House along with a BBQ for parents/guardians, current staff and students, as well as former staff and students, who are encouraged to visit and remember their time at St. Sofia.
“We’re excited to be celebrating our 30th Anniversary,” said St. Sofia principal, Patricia Kasij. “For 30 years, we have opened our doors to thousands of children in the Ukrainian Byzantine Rite Catholic community. One of our goals has always been to teach our students to be proud Canadians first and nurture their Byzantine faith and traditions.” In addition to following the Ontario Curriculum, students are given the opportunity to learn about their heritage through the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board’s International Languages program.
A commemorative CD will be presented with songs written and sung by St. Sofia students reflecting the virtues and unique qualities that make St. Sofia the school it is today.
