Grade 9 Mathematics Assessment Results
Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics
The Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics conducted by EQAO measures student achievement of the Grade 9 expectations in The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 9 and 10: Mathematics, 2005 (Revised). The assessment is intended to provide a snapshot of student achievement on the assessment unit and to supplement the comprehensive information that is collected by teachers from various classroom assessments. The assessment provides multiple opportunities for students, enrolled in academic and applied mathematics programs, to demonstrate what they know and what they can do in relation to the mathematical strands (number sense and algebra; linear relations; measurement and geometry; and, in the academic program, analytical geometry) and categories (knowledge and understanding; thinking; communication; and application).
Student work on the assessment is evaluated according to the expectations in The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 9 and 10: Mathematics, 2005 (Revised) using a four-level assessment scale that reflects the four achievement levels in Grades 9 and 10: Mathematics, 2005 (Revised). These four levels are as follows:
• Level 4 identifies achievement within the provincial curriculum that exceeds the provincial standard.
• Level 3 (the provincial standard) identifies a high level of achievement of the provincial expectations.
• Level 2 identifies achievement that is approaching the standard.
• Level 1 identifies achievement that falls below the provincial standard.
Board Results
Results from the spring 2011 administration of the EQAO primary division and junior division assessments of reading, writing and mathematics, and the Grade 9 assessment of mathematics demonstrated remarkable results for Dufferin-Peel. Examination of all eight EQAO assessments has indicated that the proportion of Dufferin-Peel students achieving the provincial standard in Grades 3, 6 and 9 continues to meet or exceed provincial averages, with gains of 6% and 10% over last year’s results in some areas.
