Based on section 3.1 of the Ministry document, Ontario Secondary Schools, Grades 9 to 12: Program and Diploma Requirements (1999), and Policy and Program Memorandum 139, effective November 17, 2007, to qualify for an OSSD, you must:
- complete 40 hours of community involvement
- pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test.
18 Compulsory Credits as follows:
- 4 credits in English (one core ENG credit per grade)
- 1 credit in French as a second language (Grade 9)
3 credits in Mathematics (two from grade 9/10 and at least one credit from grades 11/12)
2 credits in Science (Grade 9 and 10)*
1 credit in Canadian Geography
1 credit in Canadian History
1 credit in the Arts
1 credit in Health and Physical Education
0.5 credit in Civics
0.5 credit in Career Studies
Group 1: One credit in
- French as a second language or a Native language or
a Classical or international language or
a Social Sciences and Humanities credit or
a Canadian and World Studies credit or
a Guidance and Career Education credit or
a credit in Cooperative Education*
Group 2: One credit in
- a 2nd Health and Physical Education credit or
- a 2nd Arts credit or
- a Business Studies credit or
- a credit in Cooperative Education*
Group 3: One credit in
- a 3rd Science Credit from grades 11/12or
- a credit in Technological Education or
- a credit in Cooperative Education*
12 Elective Credits
One religion credit per year must be taken in Catholic secondary schools.
* A maximum of 2 credits in Cooperative Education can count as compulsory credits.
