ESL programs
ESL courses assist students whose first language is not English to learn the language of instruction. Most have received educational experiences in their own countries that have prepared them for success in the secondary school program. Depending on their previous experience with English, they may be placed in ESL level A, B, C, D or E. The home school will refer those arriving in Dufferin-Peel, and who need a language assessment to the appropriate newcomer reception and assessment centre.
ELD Program Support
English Literacy Development (ELD) programs are for students whose first language is other than English or is a variety of English significantly different from that used for instruction in Ontario schools. Students in these programs are most often from countries in which their access to education has been limited, and they have had limited opportunities to develop language and literacy skills in any language.
English Language Learner's with limited prior schooling require English Literacy Development (ELD) Programs which combine language learning with accelerated literacy development. Students who require ELD support in English will likely require ELD support in all subject/curriculum areas. Given the appropriate support and instruction in literacy development, ELLs with limited prior schooling can transition from ELD to ESL programs. Over varying lengths, ELLs will develop the level of English proficiency that supports academic success and full integration into mainstream programs.
