eLearning:  Assessment and Evaluation

In Dufferin-Peel, eLearning courses adhere to the same assessment and evaluation policies and procedures as those that apply to regular face-to-face day courses.  These policies and procedures are outlined in the secondary student agenda and align with the Ministry of Ontario’s assessment, evaluation, and reporting document, Growing Success, First Edition, 2010.

In Dufferin-Peel, the learning process involves a partnership between the student and teacher.

For this reason, timelines for the submission of assessments for evaluation in eLearning (e.g. assignments, tests, discussions) are established to encourage students to manage their time and to take responsibility for their learning as well as to allow teachers to effectively deliver curriculum, provide timely feedback, as appropriate, and manage the evaluation of assessments.

eLearning students, therefore, are responsible for:

·         providing evidence of their learning to their teachers within established timelines;

·         understanding that teachers require this evidence to improve student learning and to report on their achievement;

·         understanding that there are consequences for late and missed assignments;

·         seeking clarification from the teacher (within the LMS), in advance of the established timelines, when encountering difficulties with an assignment;

·         contacting the teacher (within the LMS) when experiencing/anticipating difficulty in meeting the established deadlines;

·         advising the teacher (within the LMS) in advance of potential conflict with religious accommodations.

Given the above and the nature of the eLearning course, it is critical that the student remain in contact with the teacher on an on-going basis so that the teacher can provide appropriate support, as required.  Failure to do so may jeopardize learning and the granting of a credit.

In the event that an assessment is not submitted for evaluation by the due date, the teacher will:

·         contact the student (within the LMS) and the parent(s)/guardian(s) to review the circumstances related to the non-submission;

·         notify them of the potential consequences (e.g. mark deduction);

·         establish a closure date.

If the assignment is submitted by the closure date, a mark deduction up to 10% may apply.

If the assignment is not submitted by the closure date, a mark deduction up to the full value of the assignment (a zero) may apply.
