In September 2010, Ontario began phasing-in Full Day Kindergarten for four- and five-year olds. As of September 2012, Dufferin-Peel will offer this program at 55 school sites. The Ministry of Education’s goal is to have the program fully implemented in all publicly-funded schools in the province by 2014. View a complete list of schools and implementation dates (PDF).
About the Program
Through instruction and play-based learning, children in Full-Day Kindergarten develop socially and emotionally through interaction with their peers and the adults who teach and guide them. They also develop their capacity in language and mathematics, and engage in healthy physical activities and the arts. A new curriculum, based largely on the current kindergarten program, is being used in full-day classrooms.
As part of the full-day program, certified teachers and registered early childhood educators work together to help young students learn and grow during the regular school day. Families can also choose to register their children for optional student programs held before and after the regular school day.
Full-Day Kindergarten registration will take place at the same time regular Kindergarten registration occurs. For information about Kindergarten registration, contact your local Catholic school or visit the Kindergarten Registration page of our website.
Optional Extended Day Program and Before/After School Child Care for 6-12 year olds
The optional Extended Day Program (for four- and five-year olds) in Dufferin-Peel Catholic schools is provided by three child care agencies: Family Day Care Services, PLASP Child Care Services and YMCA of Greater Toronto. The program operates in accordance with Education Act requirements, and only at sites where there is sufficient interest. Parents pay a fee of $25.00 per day* for school days and professional activity days for the 2013-14 school year. Fee subsidies are available for families who qualify for financial assistance.
Where programs are available, hours of operation on schools days are from 7:30 a.m. to school start and from school end to 6:00 p.m. Programs also operate on Professional Activity Days from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. To find out if this program is available at your school and to obtain further details regarding available programs, click here.
Please contact the appointed child care agency for your school to obtain more details regarding availability of space, registration, fees and fee subsidies.
*Note for PLASP programs only: a fee of $23.50 per day applies if the professional activity day program is not required.
