Hello parents of Corpus Christi School Community,
My name is Maria Chiera-Lyle and I am pleased to be chair of the parent teacher council for this year 2011-2012. This will be my final year so it is a bittersweet time for me .I have made so many friends from this school community as well have enjoyed working with the teaching staff. I will miss everyone!
I am a working, married mother of 2 children. My eldest is in high school and my youngest is a student at Corpus Christi in Grade 8. I am also a Registered Nurse and work as an Advanced Practice Nurse Educator within the specialty of neurosciences.
I would like to thank our Principal, Mr. Mark Cassar and the entire staff at Corpus Christi for all their hard work last year in creating a school climate that fostered both Catholic education and community engagement. The turn-around has been truly remarkable. In April and in June we had 2 parent engagement evenings where our Corpus Christi parents had the opportunity to listen to speakers and parent experts that were hosted by the parent school council. We have had the best parent turnout in years!
A special thank you to Mr. Cassar and the teaching staff for their hard work and commitment to student success. The results of our EQAO scores were incredible. It is a great example of their commitment to student success and the willingness to help them achieve! The staff is very passionate about Catholic education and they have implemented new learning initiatives to help our children be successful.
In a very short time, new curriculum documents were ordered and a revamping of best-practice teaching strategies is well under way. We also had an influx of support resources, a renewed emphasis on data analysis, and a host of student initiatives like sports, arts and featured presentations. A newly refurbished gym lends to a new atmosphere in the school built on pride, high expectations and a great Catholic educational experience.
As a school council it is imperative that we, as parents work together within our Catholic school to help foster an environment which will help our children with academic success, and foster a philosophy that embodies those Christian values that our Lord Jesus taught us.
"In 2000-2001, the Ontario government took significant steps to ensure that parents, through their school councils, would have greater influence in their child’s education" (Dufferin -Peel Catholic District School Board).
As you become involved in the Corpus Christi school council, you can help shape your child’s opportunity to learn by advocating on his/her behalf and helping to implement policies that will enhance their learning while maintain those Christian values. Our meetings are held once a month and all are welcome to attend. I encourage you to come out and meet the members of our council as well to voice your thoughts.

On Wednesday September 21st we had our first council meeting and discussed that as a council we would like to support many activities (i.e. fundraising initiatives, increase the EQAO scores ) and that we encourage you as parents to support these initiatives by coming out and contributing your thoughts. We had a very large number of parents who came out and contributed many ideas and suggestions. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.
On Sept 28th at our school BBQ we had the opportunity to meet and greet the teaching staff as well to reconnect with many friends and neighbours of the Corpus Christi School community. Students and their parents/guardians also had the opportunity to stop and shop in our library at the book fair which was a great success!
On behalf of the entire School Council we look forward to meeting with you at our next meeting on Wednesday October 26th @6:30pm in the school gym. I have invited both our trustees to attend, Mrs. Abbruscato and Mr. Ferreira to attend. I hope you will join us!
God Bless!
Maria
