Summer Break Is Coming
The long 8 weeks of summer break is quickly approaching; do you have plans for your teen? The teenage years are is very difficult time for parents to know what to do with their youth for 8 weeks. We have some ideas…
1. Start volunteer hours
A requirement for graduation is that all students must complete 40 hours of community service volunteering. Summer holidays is a great time to get started, because students are able to focus on this expectation without school routines being interrupted. The purpose of volunteering is to allow students the opportunity to gain greater confidence in social situations and adult interaction, have a greater awareness of interdependence within society, gain experience, knowledge and skill related to the world of work and gain understanding of our obligation to others (if your teen has completed the required hours it is recommended they continue in order to gain/work on the skills mentioned).
Eligible Activities include
Environmental Projects – community clean-ups, tree planting
Work with Seniors – assisting at senior residences
Religious Activities – parish/church/temple volunteer
Office/Clerical Work - if organization is providing charitable or general community benefit
Work with Animals – regional shelter only accepts volunteers that are 16yrs and older
2. Part-Time Job
A part time job throughout the summer months is a great step for students to take. They have the ability to be flexible with hours, start to learn money management and banking skills, and gain valuable employment experience. If your family needs help with employment options that will assist Youth(16 yrs and older) with ASD please contact the ASD Team (905)789-5560 ext. 79111 or Bennett Edge(An Ontario Disability Employment Support Provider) Ryan Charbonneau (905)459-4060 for more information.
