Game of Thrones written by George R.R. Martin
I stumbled on an HBO series archived on the movie network this last summer and became addicted very quickly. It’s called A Game of Thrones and it’s closely based on a book by George R.R. Martin. It is the first installment in a five book series and it is fantastic. The fantasy genre doesn’t usually appeal to me. I confess I’ve only read the first book in the Harry Potter series, but this book, upon which the series was based, really had my attention for a full week even though I knew what was going to happen because I had already watched the series. This alternate universe has a medieval feel to it with a dash of the Roman Empire and it’s filled with complex characters. I can take a completely evil character in a novel and this book has quite a few of those but I struggle with characters who are a hundred percent good. I have a harder time accepting them as believable. I don’t know why that is. What I loved about Martin’s world is that there are no entirely good characters. They are flawed and complex and wholly believable. It’s an incredibly exciting book to read. He starts the book with a detailed map of his world and concludes it with a very helpful list and description of the various houses of families vying for power in this strange and fantastic universe. I highly recommend this book to students and staff. Check it out. This Library Minute has been brought to you by the FMG Resource Centre.
