Why do people plagiarize?

  • Don't believe they could get caught
  • Know how to cite sources properly
  • Think they won't do as well as their friends
  • Leave things to the last minute and then don't have enough time to complete the assignment properly
  • Don't know how to summarize and find it easier to copy and paste from a source

What are the consequences of plagiarism?

  • Loss of respect and trust of teachers and peers
  • Zero assigned to your work
  • Fail your class
  • Possible suspension from school
  • Definite expulsion from universities or colleges

How you can avoid plagiarism:  (Research 36)

  • Take careful notes and document the source
  • Put your notes in your own words and be sure to include your own thoughts
  • Accurately record quotations, paraphrased information and page numbers
  • Follow the correct format for quotations, short quotes in quotations and longer ones are indented
  • Use parenthetical citations or footnotes/endnotes where needed as instructed by your teachers
