The History of Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School

The name ‘Holy Cross’ is traced to the celebration or veneration of the Holy Cross which is a tradition associated with the death of Jesus on Good Friday.  The feast of the exaltation of the Holy Cross is celebrated on September 14th.

Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School was built to accommodate the increasing enrolment in the Malton area during the 1960’s.  The Board of Trustees made a purchase of land from Dalewood Investments for $59510.00 on December 9, 1966.  The school was officially blessed on November 12, 1967 by Reverend Dean Johnson and along with Our Lady of the Airways School became part of the Dufferin-Peel Roman Catholic School Board in 1969.  Major additions to the school were school were completed in 1967 and 1975.  A complete renovation began in 2004 and will be completed in October 2006.  We held our rededication and 40th anniversary celebration on November 15, 2006.  It was a huge success and many former students and staff were able to join us.  Part of our celebration included the renaming of our school library in honour of Bernard Kerr, who served as principal of Holy Cross from 1988 to 1998.
