Canadian and World Studies Social Science Department
The social science program at Holy Name of Mary offers courses in history, geography, civics and law. Here is some preliminary information concerning the courses offered. Grade 9 and 10
The Geography of Canada course Grade 9 and the Canadian History course grade 10 are compulsory courses offered at both the Academic and Applied level. Academic history and geography courses develop students’ knowledge and skills through the study of theory and abstract problems. Practical applications of essential concepts are used where appropriate. Applied History and Geography focus on the essential concepts and develop students’ knowledge and skills through practical applications and concrete examples. Students are given more opportunities to experience hands-on application of core concepts and theories.
The compulsory half credit civics course is offered as an open course. This course is designed to be appropriate for all students.
Grade 11 and 12
In grade 11 and 12 two types of social science courses are offered at Holy Name of Mary, University preparation and University /College preparation. Students would choose between course types based on their interests, achievement and post secondary school goals. The university preparation courses are designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to meet entrance requirements for university programs. The university /college course are designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to meet the entrance requirements for specific programs offered at universities and colleges.
Students are to ensure they meet the prerequisite requirements for any grade 11 or 12 social science course. For grade 11 geography successful completion of grade 9 geography (academic or applied) is required. For grade 11 history or law successful completion of grade 10 history (academic or applied) is required. For grade 12 history, geography or law courses, students are required to successfully complete any university or university/college or college preparation course in Canadian and World Studies, English or Social Science and Humanities.
Courses in grade 11 and 12 Social Science are optional. Students should keep in mind that to meet the requirements for the secondary school diploma they must earn at least one senior level credit in their choice of Canadian and World Studies, Social Science and Humanities, English or a third language.
