HEALTHY ACTIVE LIVING EDUCATION (H.A.L.E.) PPL 301
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The focus of this course is on PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. At the senior level, students move from a team emphasis to an individual emphasis as they participate in sports, fitness, and recreational games, with the goal of finding activities to continue throughout adulthood. Students will gain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle through the investigation of personal self-defense, injury prevention, healthy sexuality, and mental health.
This course provides an opportunity for students to integrate the body, mind, and spirit in light of Catholic faith development. It provides a forum where students can develop values and moral decision-making skills in situations they will encounter as young Christians. This course will help students to commit to a lifelong physical, mental, and spiritual wellness program.
MEDICAL CONSIDERATIONS
It is strongly advised that students have a medical check-up before participating in any Physical Education program. If a student has a medical problem or condition which may affect her performance in any way, she is expected to inform her teacher and present a letter written by her parent/doctor which the teacher will keep on file.
UNIFORM
The required uniform items listed below must be worn for all indoor activity classes.
Required: White crested Royals T-shirt
Navy crested Royals shorts (both items are purchased at McCarthy’s)
White sport socks and Non-marking running shoes with firm arch support.
For use during outdoor classes only, students may purchase any of the items below or provide their own sweats. The HNM T-shirt is still required to be worn during outdoor classes.

Royals “scrub-style” pant ($5) -from phys-ed office
Royals hooded sweatshirt ($30) -from phys-ed office
*For safety reasons, No jewelry may be worn.
*If the gym uniform is lost, alternate gym clothes must be worn until the uniform is replaced. A grace period of one week is allowed. The uniform should be laundered on weekends, and students lose a participation mark if they are not in full uniform.
*All uniforms should have the student’s name permanently marked on the inside label to avoid mistaken possession.
ABSENTEEISM
Regular attendance and full participation in all class activities are required to maximize the development and acquisition of improved fitness and motor skill improvement. Absences will affect the student’s mark. Tests missed due to an absence must be made up or arranged to be made up immediately on the student's return to school. Failure to do so will result in a mark of zero for that test. Exceptions will be made on an individual basis only in the case of extenuating circumstances deemed by the teacher or administration.
NON-PARTICIPATION
If a student is physically unable to participate in class activities for an extended period of time, a medical certificate or parent/guardian note is required. It should include the nature of the problem and the length of time that the student will be incapacitated. An alternate written assignment will be given on an appropriate topic.
For minor problems or illness, a parent/guardian note is required. The student will still be expected to come to class in proper uniform. Students will inform their teacher of their level of wellness and only complete tasks that are agreed upon with the teacher.
EQUIPMENT
Gym equipment is not to be used without the presence and permission of a teacher.
Any broken equipment should be reported to the teacher immediately. Running shoes must be worn at all times in the gym or during outdoor activity. Street shoes are not allowed to be worn in the gym. The weight room may only be used when supervised by a teacher. Students using the weight room must be in workout clothes and may not bring bags or purses into the room.
