Social Science and Humanities (Family Studies)

Here is some preliminary information concerning the courses offered in family studies and social science and humanities. More detailed information including how these courses support the Catholic School Graduate Expectations can be found by following the course links below.

At Holy Name of Mary family studies also includes general social science courses. The grade 9 and 10 courses deal solely with family studies. The grade 11 and 12 courses deal with both family studies and general social science courses. All courses focus on how students view themselves, their families, their communities, and society as they seek to find meaning in the world around them. Through practical experiences, discussions, debates, research and study and reflection, family studies and general social science courses help students to become self motivated problem solvers, equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully face their changing world. All courses offered in family studies and general social sciences are either open courses which comprise a set of expectations that are appropriate for all students or university college preparation courses designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to meet the entrance requirements for specific programs offered at universities and colleges.

Social science and humanities courses give students essential knowledge and transferable skills that are applicable in various areas of their lives – in their personal and family lives as well as in their postsecondary studies and in the workplace. Individual courses provide students with a foundation for a variety of possible postsecondary destinations: positions in the retail and service
industries; community college programs in community services (including early childhood education, child and youth work, and developmental services work), creative arts (including fashion, fashion design, garment construction, and chef training), or business (including human resources); and university programs in such fields as anthropology, business studies, education, environmental studies, family studies, food and nutrition sciences, health sciences, human resources, psychology, philosophy, religious studies, social work, and sociology.
