Student Awards

 

An annual awards ceremony is held each autumn to celebrate student achievement from the previous school year.  Attendance at this event is open to all students, parents, teachers, and administrators.  At this event students are not only recognized for individual academic excellence but also for outstanding personal contribution to the school community through participation in clubs and success in contests.

 

Grade 9 – 12     ***ACADEMIC AWARDS***

 

1.      Honour Roll

 

To qualify for the honour roll students must attain 80% or higher in the courses taken at Holy Name of Mary.

The following criteria must also be met at each grade level: 

 

In grade 9 and 10 the top 8 marks must average 80% or higher

In grade 11 the top 8 courses must average 80% or higher

In grade 12 the top 6 marks must average 80% or higher

 

All courses must be taken at Holy Name of Mary during the regular school year. Summer and night school courses do not count towards honour roll

The top three students in each grade category would receive first, second, and third place academic awards.

 

2.      TOP MARK

 

This award is presented to students who achieve the highest academic standing in a specific course.

 

3.      THE JOE HUGEL AWARD

                                         

This award is presented to a student who has achieved her fullest potential in Grade 10.

 

4.      MATHEMATICS AWARDS - (Waterloo Math Contest)

 

The Canadians Mathematics Competition is a nation-wide contest sponsored by the University of Waterloo. Students who score in the top 25% in Canada receive certificates of merit and the top student in each school receives a medal.

 

5.      Credit Humber Association Math Contest

 

The students that participate in the CHAMP- Mathematics contest are recognized for the highest scores in their grade level.

 

6.      NATIONAL BIOLOGY COMPETITION AWARD           

 

The National Biology Competition Award is given to a student who achieves the highest score of all grade 11 participants in the University of Toronto National Biology Competition.

 

7.      OCEA AWARD

 

This award is a certificate of excellence given to a co-op student by The Ontario Co-Operative Education Association.

 

8.      INITIATIVE AWARD

 

This award is given to a student who demonstrates courage and ambition to be an effective leader in our community.

 

9.      HNM STAFF AWARD FOR BEST PERFORMANCE

     

The best performance ring award acknowledges students who have shown exceptional dedication to our school through their participation in clubs, fundraisers, and the like. Each student must also demonstrate a high academic achievement and be respectful to all members of our school community.

Each will receive a custom made ring from Jostens funded by HNM.

10. OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT           

 

These awards are given to students in recognition of their commitment and dedication to 2 or more co-curricular activities.

 

11. MEDIA ARTS AWARDS

 

These awards are given to students who show outstanding performance and proficiency in the following categories:

Computer Graphics, Flash Animation, Stop Motion Animation

 

12. PACE

 

The Performing Arts Council honours students who demonstrate leadership and dedication to the drama based events a Holy Name of Mary.

 

13.  DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD      

  

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Young Canadian Challenge was founded by His Royal Highness Prince Philip, to encourage personal development and community involvement for young people. The Program has Bronze, Silver and Gold awards, and is open to any person between the ages of 14 and 25. Participants achieve the award by attaining personally established goals, in the areas of Community Service, Skill Development, Physical Fitness and Expeditions

 

14. CATHOLIC STUDENT AWARD  

 

This award sponsored by the Catholic Education Foundation of Ontario is presented to an outstanding student who throughout her involvement both in school and the community has conducted herself in a manner, which typifies the objectives of the Catholic school.
