Our Patron Saint
The Patron Saint of our School is the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God. Mary was a young Galilean born between 25 and 15 B.C.E. She was visited by the angel Gabriel where she was informed that she had been chosen to become the mother of the Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God. For this reason the earliest title given to Mary was Mother of God. Later the perpetual virginity of Mary was declared in the Council of Constantinople in 533, and later still that Mary was born free from original sin and is therefore known as the Immaculate Conception. Since the earliest days of the Church the central role of Mary in the history of salvation and the influence she had on the apostles and early community has been recognized in extra-biblical writings. Because she was called upon in prayer to intercede on behalf of the Church and was always listed first and foremost in the litany of the saints a special devotion began to the name of Mary. And therefore our school is dedicated to Holy Name of Mary, recognizing both the central role she played in our salvation and later in the prayer life of the church when we called upon her name.
A large part of our pastoral work is also in providing for the needs of those in our community and in the world. Holy Name has a long and deeply rooted tradition of giving generously to those in need. This is expressed by raising money, giving time and energy in direct service, and in educating ourselves on social issues so that we might be better citizens and consumers in our society. The three main fundraisers that we will participate in this year is the Pump in Pink drive (for breast cancer), the Christmas baskets for our local parishes and finally the Sharelife week in April.
In addition, every student is currently required by the Province to do 40 hours of community service in order to receive an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. We encourage and assist students in finding avenues to fulfil this diploma requirement and to experience the joy and satisfaction which comes from giving back to their community..
We also promote direct service to those in need through our HNM Cares club. HNM Cares performs such work as serving dinners to the poor, loading cargo containers with donated goods to third world countries, visiting area nursing homes, helping out at neighbourhood libraries and in being involved in Knights Table and international relief organizations. Participation in HNM Cares is optional.
We also provide support for students in difficulty by providing pastoral counselling through the Chaplain’s office. Appointments can be made directly through the Chaplain.
The Youth for Christ club will meet every Thursday after school. This is a support group for students who wish to explore their faith. They will also lead the school in the rosary, the Luminous mysteries will be prayed in October, the Joyous in December, the Sorrowful in March and the Glorious in May.
Special focus for the year.
Catholicity across the curriculum – once again we are going to be reviewing the catholicity aspect of all of our courses and ensuring compliance with the documents from ICE and the board.
Two areas that were identified as needing special attention in the pastoral planning process were mental health and continued staff faith development support.
The students identified needing more help in coping with various mental health issues the number one being stress, especially in gr. 12. We are going to be having a mental health day in March to help gr. 12’s to more comfortable make the transition to postsecondary life.
In keeping with the “new ethical conduct guidelines for coaches” document we are going to focus our coaches to represent their Catholic values through prayer and exhibit Catholic values during play. Students are called to model our Catholic Values in their conduct both on and off the field or court. We will create an athletic prayer for teams to use prior to start of play. A committee will be formed at the beginning of each season to review our implementation of the policy.
