The Ontario Secondary School Diploma requirements include the completion of 40 hours of community service by each student.
The Dufferin-Peel District School Board supports this because it encourages students to have a deeper understanding of the Christian call to service and to live out this call by participating in various forms of community outreach. We strongly suggest that students complete this requirement in the first couple of years of high school.
At Iona, each student in grade 9 received instruction on this process, eligible activities, resources and information on how to document their hours. They received two documents:
"Christian Community Involvement - Passport Companion Parent Resource Manual"
"Christian Community Passport to the World of Service"
Suggested sample activities (ie. charitable and non-profit) and those considered ineligible are listed in both documents.
All eligible activities completed are to be properly documented in the Passport by including letters/certificates of completion.
Submit your Passport to Guidance for entry to your academic record when a substantial block of hours has been completed.
Once your 40 hours required for your diploma have been met and recorded, you can continue to track your hours and keep a personal portfolio. See the document "Community Service Plus Activity Record".
