All students in grades 9 and 10, as well as those students taking grade 11 and 12 university English, participate in the Accelerated Reader program which is designed to improve reading comprehension.
Students read books at their own level (for grades 11 and 12 the min. reading level of the book is 5.0) and answer content-based quizzes.
We currently have 2,670 AR quizzes; you can view the list by author or by title.
(A few quizzes on this list are excluded from the program.)

Why are we doing this?
The Accelerated Reader program will help:
-
advance reading, comprehension and critical-thinking skills;
-
encourage the love of reading;
-
inculcate independent reading and provide more opportunities for reading books of interest outside the class list;
-
encourage students to read more carefully;
-
build a sense of achievement;
-
and generally prepare students for literacy tests.
Rules
-
The borrowing period for AR books is two weeks. You are able to renew a book provided that it is not on hold for another student.
-
Only one AR book may be borrowed at a time.
-
Student picture ID is required. You will be given zero percent for AR if you try to write a quiz for someone else.
-
Grade 11 and 12 students must read books level 5.0 or higher.
-
You may attempt only one quiz per day.
-
You may only take a quiz once. Failed quizzes may not be repeated.
-
Full points are given for a perfect score.
-
Pro-rated points are given for scores of 60-99%, depending on the number of questions.
-
The due dates and overdue fines are the same as for any other resource in the library.
How does it work ?
-
The teacher-librarian conducts an orientation for each participating class.
-
Each student chooses his or her own book to read.
-
The student reads the book independently.
-
When the student has finished reading the book, he or she takes a multiple choice quiz on a computer.
-
The AR program generates feedback on the test for the student. Students are encouraged to share the test results with their teacher and parents.
-
Teachers receive periodic reports on the results of their students.
Testing Procedures
-
Students must present identification before taking a quiz.
-
Quizzes will be taken independently under the supervision of library staff.
-
Students are not allowed to refer to the book while taking the quiz (unless allowed in their IEP).
-
A report will be generated which may be shown to the class teacher and to parents.
-
**Various accommodations are made for students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP).
Commitment to Excellence
- Start with a shorter book. Use it as a guide to writing AR quizzes.
- Choose a novel by reading a couple of pages first. Get a feel for the book before you borrow it.
- Make sure you have a couple of minutes and ask Mr. Lepage about some good books.
- Be sure to take the time to read your novel well.
- Attempt the quiz soon after reading the novel.
- Avoid attempting quizzes based on just watching the movie. You will fail!
- AR is the teacher's gift to you. Enjoy the novels you choose and writing the quizzes will be easy.
Prizes
-
The students who achieve the most points each semester may select from interesting prizes, and the top achiever's name each semester will be recorded on a plaque on display in the library.
-
The highest score to date reached by a student is a total of 707.9 points! (School year 2011-12, S1)

It is chiefly through books that we enjoy the communion with superior minds. In the best books, authors talk to us, give us their most precious thoughts, and pour their souls into ours. God be thanked for books.
-- William Ellery Channing.
The best of a book is not the thought which it contains, but the thought which it suggests; just as the charm of music dwells not in the tones but in the echoes of our hearts.
-- John Greenleaf Whittier
