  White Pine Reading Club

The White Pine Reading Club is a voluntary, extra-curricular activity that is an opportunity for students to interact and discuss books in the White Pine book award program.  Students meet for book discussion in the library approximately once a month, under the supervision of a staff advisor.

2011 White Pine Official Selections

The club will be starting up again in November 2011, under the supervision of Ms. Price.  In addition to regular meetings, students will be able to participate in a private discussion forum that will be limited to club members only.

 History

The White Pine Award was started by Durham District School Board Secondary Teacher-Librarians and adopted by the Ontario School Library Association as a provincial reading program for high school students.

The goals of the White Pine Award are:

  • to promote reading for enjoyment among high school students
  • to make students aware of quality Canadian young adult books
  • and to provide opportunities for students to discuss the nominated titles in an authentic manner

Ten books are selected annually.  Students read at least four of the nominated titles and vote in the spring; the author who receives the most votes from all students taking part in program in Ontario is the winner.
