Diamond Simpson

Congratulations to Diamond Simpson, a grade 12 student at St. Joseph Secondary School, who represented Canada once again at the Under 17 FIFA World Cup Soccer Championships in Trinidad and Tobago in September 2010. This was not Diamond’s first World Cup, as she represented Canada in 2008 as well. This year the team was undefeated in qualifying for this event and showed great talent on the pitch. Canada won their first game of the World Cup against Ghana, but met against some of the top teams in the world after that, which lead to an early defeat. Diamond is a midfielder on the team, and she played every game all game. We are very proud of Diamond’s accomplishments and wish her luck as she pursues scholarship opportunities at American universities.
OYAP in the works!
St. Joseph students are becoming acquainted with The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP). Every year, several students take part in the program and become apprentices registered with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. The objective of the program is to ensure the continuity of quality training by an employer, after a student recieves his/her Ontario Secondary School Diploma. The employers understand that when they agree to register a student they commit to the longterm training. The benefit to the student is that they get a “jump start” on their careers at an earlier age while still attending high school.
How does a student enrol? Students who have completed Grade 10, and who are at least 16 years old, can register for co-operative education and OYAP through the Guidance Department.
In this program, students take the recommended technology, cooperative education, math, science, and english courses to develop skills to prepare them for the different sectors (auto service, construction, service and manuafacturing). Michelle Pais (Grade 11) is a new registrant; working as an assistant cook at Mexicali Rosa’s (Erin Mills). The service sector is vastly expanding but Jim DiNatale (Owner/Operator) is looking ahead, investing time, engaging a youth, and delivering a quality training program! In return on his investment is pre-trained student ready to continue her apprenticeship with Mexicali Rosa’s. What a success!

Make a difference in the life of a child in as little as one hour a week by volunteering to be an In-School Mentor. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel in partnership with the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board matches elementary girls and boys with a caring adult mentor. Matches meet for one hour each week during school hours and on school property to share in fun activities such as playing board games, baking or playing sports. The result -- increased self-esteem, better grades and improved relationships with family and peers.
The positive results of this program are truly commendable. Children are in need of a mentor in our schools and you can make a significant difference in a child's life by volunteering today. Call 905-457-7288 or visit www.bbbspeel.com for further information.
