The Cardinal Leger English curriculum is committed to the high expectations and goals as set out in the Ministry of Education 2007 English Curriculum documents. Language is the cornerstone of our culture and the basis for all meaningful communication. As catholic educators, it is our intent to implement the curriculum in such a way as to ensure that each student achieves his or her potential as language learners in the context of our faith and beliefs.
We believe that all students can become successfully literate by practicing the skills of reading, writing, listening, viewing and representing. Many opportunities for student learning are offered in a variety of genres and themes with a particular sensitivity to the diversity issues that reflect our community and the world around us.
It is important that students become critical and analytical thinkers, who can gather pertinent information from research and question, assess and evaluate the information. Equally important is their ability to recognize the connections between what they have read and their own lives and experiences, as well as the universal human experience. In this way, students will be encouraged to formulate their own opinions and ideas and to express their views in a variety of ways including written, dramatic, media and oral presentations.
It is our goal as teachers to provide a positive environment for all our students with every effort made to engage our students in their own learning by providing interesting and informative activities. It is our hope to share our love of literature with our students and to inspire them to embrace it with enthusiasm.
In partnership and communication with parents, we will work together to ensure each student’s success. The development of language skills is critical for students to become contributing members of our society.
