ATTENDANCE POLICY & PROCEDURES
The Board sets out as the responsibility of each student “to be in attendance at all classes and scheduled activities on time and with the proper materials required for full participation" (Mission Statement). Regular and punctual attendance for all classes and scheduled activities (retreats and fieldtrips) is the expectation of every student and it is vital to the process of learning. Evaluation is made daily; therefore, the more regularly you attend, the greater the opportunity for success.
1. Student Absences
Parents/guardian responsibilities
V Notify the Attendance Office (905-453-2232 ext 62302) between 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. on the day of absence.
V Provide the student’s name, grade and reason for the absence.
V Provide a Parental/guardian signed and dated note confirming the absence (duration and reason) on the day of student’s return to school.
Student’s Responsibilities
V When a student returns to school after an absence, the student is required to:
v Between 7:30 a.m. & 8:00 a.m. provide the parental/guardian note to the Attendance Office before school begins. Students who do not have a period 1 class are required to provide the parental/guardian note to the attendance office prior to their first class of the day.
v An admit slip must be shown to each one of his/her teachers.
|
Students without an admit slip will be treated as truant (refer to policy re skips & lates) |
2. Student Lates
Punctual attendance is critical to classroom success, an important job skill and a courteous social attribute. All students are expected to punctually attend all classes unless they are excused by either their parents or the school. The process outlined below is intended to reinforce that expectation.
Late to Class
Students are considered late for class if they are not in the classroom, prepared to work, when the bell rings.
1st late – teacher warning
2nd late – teacher assigns a consequence
3rd late – teacher contacts parents and assigns a consequence
4th late – student is referred to a Vice–principal who assigns a
consequence
5th late – parents are contacted; student is sent home for one day
6th late – student is suspended for 2 days; a parent conference is held
3. Skipping Class
Absences are considered truancy if students are away without permission, or in the case of 18 years olds, a reason that is not considered valid by their teacher or Vice-principal.
1st skip – teacher contacts parents and assigns a consequence
2nd skip – student is referred to a VP, parents are contacted and a
consequence is assigned
3rd skip – parents are contacted and the student is sent home for
one day
4th skip – parents are contacted and the student is suspended for
three days.
4. Student Illness
V Students who become ill during the day are required to go to the Attendance Office.
V These students will be allowed to sign out only after parental permission has been received.
V Leaving the school without signing out through the office is recorded as truancy.
5. 18 Year Olds
Students who have attained the legal age of majority (18 years old) may sign their own notes for absences or sign outs as long as they have a valid reason. The same procedures for absences and sign outs apply to students who are 18 years old or over (i.e. submit absence and sign out notes to the attendance office before your first class). The school administration reserves the right to ask at any time for proof of valid reason for absence or sign outs.
6. Day Absences and After School Activities
Students who are absent all day due to illness or truancy may not attend extra or co-curricular activities after school.
HOLIDAY/EXTENDED ABSENCE POLICY AND PROCEDURE
Regular attendance on the part of students is vital to the process of learning. A student who is absent for any prolonged period, may suffer in the evaluation process because his/her participation and achievement cannot be fully assessed and may not be granted the credit.
On occasion, parents choose to remove their son/daughter or students themselves choose to leave school for an extended time in order to go on holiday outside of the regular scheduled school breaks. Questions may arise as to the responsibility for missed work and evaluation during this time period.
Please be advised that the policy for Cardinal Leger Secondary School is as follows:
1. Process for Extended Absence
A student is completely responsible for advising the appropriate vice-principal and each of his/her teachers and the attendance office in writing (with a parental or guardian signature) of the dates of his/her departure and return to school, at least two weeks before departing. Students will then be given an “Extended Absence Form” from the attendance secretary which must be completed by all teachers, signed by the student, their parent/guardian and finally the vice-principal.
2. Student Responsibility
A student is completely responsible for any missed work, handouts, notes and assignments and tests (as per information included on the “Extended Absence Form”).
3. Adverse Effects
A student’s mark will be adversely affected by a prolonged absence in a performance-based course where daily participation carries a substantial weight.
4. Assignments and Reports
If assignments and reports are handed in prior to a student’s departure, then the student will be eligible for full marks. Otherwise assignments that were given prior to an absence, but were handed in after the due date are subject to the appropriate penalty applied by the course teacher.
5. Projects, Presentations and Performances
V Individual Presentation and/or Performances that were scheduled prior to or during the student’s absence may be rescheduled at the teacher’s discretion.
V A student who is part of a Group Task (i.e. project performance or presentation), which is due or takes place during the student’s absence may receive a mark of zero on the performance or presentation component of the group task.
6. Labs
Due to the specific timing, preparation and availability of material for labs, the student’s absence will result in a mark of zero being given.
