“Growing in truth and love.”
Cardinal Leger Pastoral Plan
Theme: God is Love
“God is love and we who abide in love abide in God and God abides in us.”
1 John 4: 16(adapted)
We, who are God’s magnificent creation, are invited to live in the love
God has generously given us and continues to give us when we choose
to accept this gift. Responding to God in gratitude, enables us to receive love from others as well as to care for those whom God has given us in family and friendship. As Catholic Christians, we are further challenged to love ourselves who are vessels of God’s love and to gently care for the earth, which most tangibly reveals God’s goodness and generosity to us its habitants.
When we decide to walk with God, to befriend Jesus and to listen to the Holy Spirit, our journey of faith opens the way to peace, hope and love.
Leger Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, remove our fear to love; so that we can boldly show charity and caring to those whom we meet each day. Give us the light to see your presence in each person. May we as a Catholic school community, model our faith on that of Cardinal Leger and Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, who is our patron. We pray this in your name. Amen.
Excerpt from Pope Benedict XVI first encyclical, God is Love:
“We have come to believe in God’s love; in these words the Christian can express the fundamental decision of his life. Being Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea, but the encounter with an event, a person, which give life a new horizon and a decisive direction.”
In this year of 2006-2007, the chosen theme is “love” from our school motto.
The more practical Catholicity goal #1 enables the Leger community to tangibly respond to the pastoral and spiritual theme chosen for this 2006-2007 school year.
“Staff and students will deepen their understanding, creation and appreciation of the sacred space, culture and environment of the Catholic school.”

Principal’s Message:
As we reflect upon our Pastoral Theme and the quote from the Gospel of John it would be wise to remember that we need not live life in a hurry. Those who live a wise, spiritually based life know how to separate things and how to enjoy each of them. They know that many run through life’s pleasures without taking time to enjoy them. It is my hope that our pastoral plan will help everyone in the Cardinal Leger community enjoy the simple pleasures that God gives us every day by abiding in His love.
Academic Resource Department
Spiritual/Faith goal for 2006-07
The faith goal for this year is for each identified student to realize that they are created in God’s image and through his love they will recognize their own strengths and weaknesses and they will be encouraged to explore new challenges and set realistic, achievable goals for present and future career possibilities.
English Department
In the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians he says, "if I have all faith...but do not have love, I am nothing." Agape, the Greek word for love, has many levels of meaning from a simple feeling of enjoyment to the sacrificial love of saints, but every expression of love comes from its source: our loving God. In the English department we abide in God's love by treating one another with respect and admiration. We see each of our students as a person loved by God and part of our family of faith. In our literature we see the universal theme of love explored by creative minds and recognize God's presence in the best of human behaviour. These readings and discussions raise the students' awareness of God's love in our journey of life and model for them how love is the key to fulfillment. We cannot be truly happy until we accept God's love and live in His goodness.

Cardinal Leger Mathematics Department
Teach God is Love We integrate Catholic principles into our curriculum. In our classroom, we strive to provide examples and symbols of our faith into our Math lessons whenever possible. The crucifix, as symbol of Catholicism is actually a Cartesian plane, with an x,y-axis that intersects at the origin, which represents our belief in creation as the origin of life on earth. (Genesis 1:1-5)
Celebrate God’s Love We will continue to pray in our classrooms at the beginning of each class, (except period one). By leading or encouraging students to lead in the, “Our Father” we are being respectful and inclusive to All of our students (those who are Christian and/or not Roman Catholic), who certainly know the Lord’s Prayer which Jesus gave the world.)
We attend and actively participate in 8:30am mass at St. Mary’s church, with our Math classes twice yearly, during period one.
Showing God’s Children Love
We demonstrate our love for every student by accepting new students, for example, who arrive in our courses after the starting date, as a result of a schedule or level of difficulty (academic – applied) change. Although these changes are quite inconvenient for the Math teacher, by allowing students an opportunity to be successful we are, not only showing God’s children love, but we are exemplifying our schools’ Catholic motto of “children first.”
Witnessing God’s Love By continuing to encourage the members of the Math Department to do the Morning Prayer & reflection over the P.A., we act as witnesses (John 5:30) and provide leadership for the entire Leger faith community to proclaim that: God is Love!
Reflect & Rejoice God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the Day of Judgment, because as he is, so are we in this world…We love because he first loved us (1 John 4:16-19).
Moderns/ESL Department
The Moderns and ESL Department hopes to help students understand God’s love within each person. Through all of our courses and activities, we will teach students the importance of accepting ourselves, others and the Earth as well as the importance of being open to different cultures in an effort to promote love, charity, personal and world peace.
Physical Education/Arts Department
The goal of the PHE/ARTS Department is to celebrate the magnificent creation of our individuality through expressions in physical fitness, teamwork, and creative abilities as expressed in the arts and athletic endeavours.
Science Department
Our universe is a place which is subject to a number of fundamental scientific principles. By teaching these biological, chemical, and physical principles we can better prepare our students to face a world encountering unprecedented change. As knowledge quickly expands, it is crucial for students to learn to make wise and moral decisions based upon scientific principles and their Catholic values
Theology and Family Studies Department
As we commence this school year, under the theme “God is Love”, we are reminded of our role as a Catholic community. St. Paul informs us in I Corinthians 13:4 that Love is patient, love is kind… it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.
Theology courses are compulsory for each grade level. These courses instill, in our students, the fundamentals of love and the importance of love within the global community. The Catholic secondary curriculum included the study of biblical, historical, ethical, sacramental, theological, and the pastoral teachings of the Catholic Church and our Christian heritage. The Theology department, in its catechetical role, is mandated to teach and model the Gospels and the teachings of the Church.
As a Catholic community, the staff and students of Cardinal Leger Secondary Schools are encouraged to live their daily lives as Disciples of Christ. In prayer and devotion to the Holy Spirit, we strive to be constantly aware of His presence in our souls through grace. The Holy Spirit’s guidance, enlightenment and strength will enable us to respond to His inspirations faithfully. Theological courses serve to deepen our understanding of God and Church as Leger students are continuously reminded of Jesus’ love for us.
