** LITERATI LANCER WEAR **
Literati intersted in purchasing Book Club sweaters, hoodies, shirts or hats should take a look at the sample sizes available from the Athletic Council. The first batch of orders will be arriving soon.
OUR NEXT MEETING WILL TAKE PLACE: THURS. FEB. 9, 2012.
THE MOTTO:
The Léger Literati Book Club's motto is a simple Latin phrase: Lego a libri nobis! Meaning, come and read a book with us. This common book club motto was taken up by founding Literati members in 2006 because first, it's Latin and therefore sounds vintage-cool and second, because really, the club is a social, communal gathering. We read the same novels and therefore we have quite a bit to chat about (and to debate) at each get-together. Reading, when you're part of a club like ours, is really a far more social, than a solitary, experience.
THE LITERATI:
While our readership changes yearly as students graduate and move on, our club has continued to maintain a membership of at least 30 Literati Lancers. This is mainly because Literati members stay with the club throughout their time at Léger. In some years, our readership has surpassed our novel count, reaching over 40 readers. Most definitely our strong Lancer loyalty to the Literati is rooted, in large part, to the fact that, we really are a community of readers.
THE NOVELS:
The novels our Literati read are selected by the Ontario Library Association (OLA) and are part of their "Forest of Reading Program." Meaning, not only are several other Dufferin-Peel secondary students reading the same novels as our Literati, so are a great many of the secondary school students in the province. In fact, the OLA estimates that the number of Ontario students participating in the ``Forest of Reading Program” is well over 250,000 annually. It is, in fact, Canada’s largest reading club. This year, our Literati will also have the option of reading the ``White Pine`` non-fiction titles. These include such popular selections as The Book of Awesome by Neil Pasricha; Call Me Russell by Canadian comedian Russell Peters; and the already popular graphic text Two Generals by Scott Chantler, among seven other non-fiction titles.
THE AUTHORS:
As all the OLA reading program selections are always Canadian titles, often these authors live in and around our own community. This has made it possible to have had several "White Pine" nominated authors pay our book club a visit over the years. Natale Ghent, Eric Walters, Dan Aker and Heather Waldorf have all joined our book club meetings to speak about their writing processes and their journey in the world of professional writing. We certainly hope to have one of this year's "White Pine" nominees visit Léger soon. Stay tuned to this site for possible guest author developments!
AN INVITATION:
All Lancers are certainly welcome to pop into the library and sign up to the Léger Literati book club. Simply heed the morning announcements or refer to the school's website for meeting details. We would love to have you join us: lego a libri nobis!
