STUDENTS AND BUSINESS STUDIES

At St. Marcellinus Secondary High School our Business Studies courses provide students with a unique insight into the world of business. Through its study, students discover how businesses operate and how they can be a part of that business world. They will learn about the key elements and essential business functions. It offers an excellent foundation for those wishing to pursue careers in management, marketing, project management, economics, financial accounting, international business, human resources, and entrepreneurship as well as those interested in furthering their computer application skills and web page development using Microsoft Office 2007 and Dreamweaver as platforms for study.

Students will gain business knowledge, understanding and skills. They will begin to understand current events in local, national and global contexts. They learn how to use relevant terms, concepts and methods effectively to describe business and economic behaviour. Students also consider business ethics and the impact of business on the environment.
Within the Business Studies department we want our students to develop as independent learners and encourage them to use an enquiring, critical approach to distinguish facts from opinions, form arguments and make informed judgments.

This program prepares students for further study of business and business-related programs at the post-secondary level as well as preparing student for the world of work

STUDENTS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE

Computer Science teaches students problem-solving skills, and to become critical thinkers and good communicators. These courses teach students how to be innovative and inquiring through programming. Courses offered in the Computer Studies Department will give students the fundamental knowledge they need to be successful in the 21st century.

EXTRACURRICULARS AND BUSINESS STUDIES

We currently have established a business club for students giving them an opportunity to put theory into practice! Our club, BECOM (Business Enterprise Club of Marcellinus) has been a wonderful opportunity for business-minded students to get together and initiate, implement and demonstrate leadership within the school, and community. Our club annual goals include:

1.      Profit - What business club would we be if we didn’t try to make money!

2.      Social Responsibility – initiative within the school or community to help make this world a better place; students enter project plan to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario’s SAVE THE WORLD competition where the plan would have to be proposed and possible funds could be awarded to carry the plan out

3.      Investment Education – students will participate in a Stock Market simulation game for high school students through Wilfred Laurier University

Students, if they so choose, may work towards obtaining a Business Studies Certificate that would be received on graduation day. To be eligible for this certificate, students must fulfill the following requirements:
