TXJ4E – Hairstyling & Aesthetics

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course enables students to develop increased proficiency in a wide range of hairstyling and aesthetics services.  Working in a salon/spa environment, students will strengthen their fundamental cosmetology skills and develop an understanding of common business practices and strategies in the salon/spa industry.  Students will also expand their understanding of environment and societal issues and their knowledge of postsecondary destinations in the hairstyling and aesthetics industry.

 

PREREQUISITE:  Hairstyling & Aesthetics, Grade 11, Workplace Preparation.

OVERALL COURSE EXPECTATIONS:  At the end of the course students will be able have touched on the 4 main areas that all Technological Education courses must adhere to.  They consist of

A)   Hairstyling and Aesthetics Fundamentals;

B)   Hairstyling and Aesthetics Skills;

C)   Industry Practices, The Environment, and Society

D)   Professional Practice and Career Opportunities.

 

Within each area, the following course expectations will be addressed.

 

A.    demonstrate an understanding of aspects of human physiology that are relevant to hairstyling and aesthetics;

B.    demonstrate knowledge of the chemical properties of hairstyling and aesthetics products and their physical effects on hair, skin, and nails;

C.    demonstrate an understanding of effective business practices and strategies for salon/spa operators, managers, and owners use professional techniques to perform salon/spa services that meet industry standards;

D.    use a variety of approaches to meet the hairstyling and aesthetics needs of a diverse clientele professionally and effectively;

E.    demonstrate exemplary practices for maintaining a safe and healthy work environment for students and clients.

F.     evaluate practices and products in the hairstyling and aesthetics industry in terms of their impact on the environment;

G.    identify and describe career opportunities and related training and education requirements in the hairstyling and aesthetics industry.

EVALUATION POLICY:  Students will be assessed & evaluated according to the work they have produced & skills they have displayed. Methods of providing feedback will include assessing completed assignments, tests, co-operative learning activities & presentations. Student marks will be determined by assessing & evaluating process & product according to the Achievement Level Chart:

Insufficient achievement of curriculum expectations. A credit will not be granted.

 

EVALUATION STRUCTURE: Student work will be assessed and evaluated according to the four achievement categories defined in the curriculum document

RESOURCES: Teacher created in addition to an array of books that are available to the students.  Students are expected to keep a binder with all handouts provided.

 

 

REPLACEMENT COST AND DAMAGE: The replacement cost for a lost, stolen, or damaged equipment which is beyond repair is $75.00. The cost of replacing damaged equipment will be paid by the student.
