ACADEMIC HONESTY

Students must not plagiarize, cheat, copy or deliberately present the language, ideas or thoughts of another individual as their own work.  Consequences include assessing a grade of zero on an assignment, test or exam (Catholic Code of Conduct).

St. Martin Secondary School emphasizes respect and pride of one’s own work and for the work of others.  For this reason, cheating on tests, exams and assignments is viewed as morally and academically unacceptable and will result in a mark of zero on that test, exam, or assignment.  Students who plagiarize or assist others in plagiarizing and/or cheating will be disciplined accordingly.

HOLIDAY / EXTENDED ABSENCE POLICY AND PROCEDURE

A prolonged absence may result in one’s participation in the evaluation and achievement process not be fully assessed.  This may result in a credit not being granted.

On occasion, parents choose to remove their son/daughter or students themselves choose to leave school for an extended time outside of the regular scheduled school breaks.  Questions may arise as to the responsibility for missed work and evaluation during this time period.  Please be advised that the policy for St. Martin Secondary School is as follows:

PROCESS FOR EXTENDED ABSENCE

A student is completely responsible for advising the appropriate vice-principal and each of his/her teachers in writing (with a parental or guardian signature) of the dates of his/her departure and return to school, at least two weeks before departing.

Student must obtain a Holiday/Extended Absence Form from the Guidance office.  This form must be signed by all of the student’s course teachers and returned to appropriate vice-principal.  Once approved, the form will then be filed in the attendance office.

            Student Responsibility

A student is completely responsible for any missed work, handouts, notes and assignments.

Adverse Effects

A student’s mark will be adversely affected by a prolonged absence in a performance-based course where daily participation carries in substantial weight.

Tests

A student who misses a test in a particular course as a result of a holiday absence must be prepared to write the missed test on the first day of his/her return to that class.

Assignments and Reports

If assignments and reports are handed in prior to a student’s departure, then the student will be eligible for full marks.  Otherwise, assignments that were given prior to an absence but were handed in after the due date are subject to the appropriate penalty applied by the course teacher.

Projects, Presentations and Performances

Individual Presentations and/or Performances that were scheduled prior to or during the student’s absence may be rescheduled at the teacher’s discretion.

A student who is part of a Group Task (i.e. project, performance or presentation), which is a due or takes place during the student’s absence may receive a mark of zero on the performance or presentation component of the group task.

Labs

Due to the specific timing, preparation and availability of materials for labs in some courses, the student’s absence will result in a mark of zero being given.

Examinations

Examinations will not be rescheduled outside the normal exam schedule to accommodate a student’s holiday.  A mark of zero, “0” will be assigned for the missed examination.  If a culminating task is intended as part of the 30%, students must complete the culminating task as per teacher’s instruction.  A student who does not complete the culminating task(s) may forfeit the portion of the 30% part of the final grade.
