Knitting Club

Fibre artist, Sue Sturdy visited Father Francis McSpiritt school to speak to students who are part of the school’s knitting club. Girls and boys have joined the artist in celebrating the roots of Peel region’s diverse community and horticultural heritage. This public art project called "Colourful Roots" will be displayed at the opening of the new Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives this coming fall.
Participating students from grades 6 to 8 meet on a weekly basis to knit 10 by 10 squares. The pieces will be sewn together and adorned with crocheted flowers in order to decorate a space which will be referred to as a "secret garden". The art work will then be dismantled and repurposed into blankets, scarves, mitts and hats and will be donated to charities and churches in the Peel Region. Students are not only learning a new skill but they are also learning about social justice issues and how they can contribute to the needs of the less fortunate.
